Besides hanging wheels from the mesh top, you can take a different type of wheel, melt holes in the plastic edge, and hang them from that.

Nice idea. Whenever I had to clean the wheel from the CT cages, I just had to remember what bar the wheel went on. ;D One question for you: those types of wheels I hear are dangerous cause a hamster can get their foot stuck in there & it can break. So...why do you have one? Or am I wrong with what I heard?

i think this wheel is safer because it has like a cheaker bored of wire. But the un safe wheels your all talking about are the ones that just go straght across. Plus wire wheels are cheap lol
just making a suggestion

I was looking at Wodent Wheels online the other day and happened upon a photo of a way to suspend one of those from the top of an aquarium using wooden slats. I was looking at WWs because I had heard good things about them and because my Silent Spinners had become so noisy! Once I realized that WWs are too large for the aquarium I took another look at my SSs and found the problem. Presumably because I am constantly having to wash Fuzz's bathroom the wheel, the two plastic halves have come somewhat loose from each other and rattle terribly when the wheel spins. A little Super Glue and--voila!--it's the return of the Truly Silent Spinner!

I don't use them for hamsters; they are too small. They are used only for gerbils.
Look elsewhere in the Habitat forum and you will see photos of other ways tyo hang wheels, if you have not seen those old photos already.
Twin Spin wheels (rotates like a normal wheel, AND spins horizontaly) are large and tend to move too much. But the wheel itself is nice so I often took the wheel off and attached it to the side of a bin with a bolt and nut.
The wheel in a Crittertrail Classic kept falling off. So I melted a hole in the side and used the old bolt and nut trick to hold the wheel to it.

I use all mesh wheels in my gerbils tanks, and one for the hamster (syrian). I used the silent spinner, and well they are NOT for gerbils, they can't take the weight and constant running and break easily. Mesh Wheel I've used these wheels for almost 3 years now. And never have had a problem with them, i highly reccomend them for gerbils. I would hang some of them but I can't in a 20G tall, and alot of my 10G's were donated to me and well the inside rim is gone hehehe Plastic + Gerbils = Do not reccomend these for many reason. #1 they are CRAP lol This wheel I've had since I was 11 or so when I had my first Hamster. Is great but can't be used with gerbils that chew.

Sometimes Silent Spinners work with gerbs; most of them are used by Spiny Mice who are slightly smaller than gerbs - and whom many consider more like gerbs than mice. (They surely act more like gerbs). Gnawing only happens to Comfort Wheels if they jam and can't move. If they move my gerbs do not chew them. I also put olive oil on the hub to lengthen the wheels' lives. I think gerbs can run in them faster. Syrians use them also. They wear out eventually, but they are cheap. I wish I had better, but I can't even find mesh wheels anywhere except PETCO, and the nearest one is a mile away.

I have used the mesh wheels before and no problems running in them, but they can be taken apart and Skittles always took it sown so enough of that one, that plastic one won't even buy it because like in the picture it would chewed so so fast. right now I have the half wheels in their tanks they love them and fight over them too I posted on this wheel before, but anyway they can't chew it up I know because it has not been done. Nibbles aptly named chews everything. lol I stopped on that

Mine do not chew those plastic Comfort Wheels (or plastic SAM wheels) so long as it spins freely and does not get jammed.

I have ones who will chew just to chew, Chevy is aweful for that. Deana, the mesh ones I find if i take the wheel from the holder, adn then squish teh holder together more, this will help it from falling off. I've had a few that did the same thing, adn they just neeed a bit of an adjustment. Also when buying them, i check to make sure all the little welds are clean and there is nothing that can hurt them (like a peice sticking up) and make sure the wheel is round, and not squished on one side or anything.
