Today I got from a plant nursery some .25% permethrin GRANULES, not powder. I cannot rub the granules in fur, but it is safer than having powder flying in the air. Yes, the rats still have some mites, despite the shampooing I talked about.
Permethrin is an old standby that gives off a gas as it evaporates. The mites are very tiny, so I did not use much ion a big 40" GP cage, the one with the chicken wire.- less than three tablespoons. We shall see. . .

The mites are under control. The permethrin seems to work. Just do not use too much for safety reasons. But deaths this year have given me some empty cages. I posted on that elsewhere.

I think Ivomectin is an orally administered drug that protects animals from mites. That is another option.
