You know, I really DO see danger everywhere! Ok, here's a weird one...I use shower hooks for hanging hammocks. Those sort of "pear-shaped" wire ones. I've always worried about a rat putting its head through the larger part, then for some reason losing its footing and strangling itself in the loop. I've never actually HEARD of it happening...but it could!...right?...maybe? Is there another way to hang them, or am I really worrying waaaaay too much? Linda

I can kind of see what you mean, but I'm not sure if I'm picturing it right in my head. And you have a right to be fearfull especially when it comes to your babies.

I use pipe cleaners, u know those fuzzy wires for crafts? When i was rat siting I noticed that's what the Rats had in their cage, so I've been useing them for the Degus and it's working great. I also have one Hammock suspended with coat hanger wire that i cut up and bent, so far so good.

>> but I'm not sure if I'm picturing it right in my head. << Neither am I, and that is why I cold use some photos of the standard hammock display--and any other toy ideas to keep rats busy.

That's the kind of hook I mean. After re-examining my set-up I realize they can't really catch themselves in the larger portion, in this photo, the bottom part..it's just to big. However if it got reversed with the narrow bit hanging down, it IS possible if all the circumstances where just wrong. It reminds me of the old-fashioned stockings-n-garter routine (or nowadays, the NAUGHTY stockings-n-garter routine)! lol which basically has that same shaped piece of wire but much tinier....where you have to wedge the little rubber thingie from the large part into the narrower part to keep the fabric in place. Maybe I've only confused you more Linda

Here's a few hammock pics: www.dapper.com.au/hammocks.htmwww.geocities.com/ratvana/As for toys, gosh, there are so many ideas! Try doing a search for "rat toys"...the lists are endless! They love simple things like toilet rolls (you can also put treats inside and fold the ends to make a rattie pinata); I recently read someone puts in a whole roll of toilet paper! Some like balls (ping pong, cat balls - I would suggest the ones with out little bells inside); bird toys are very popular; wheels of course (preferably enclosed, like a Wodent Wheel, to avoid tails getting caught, and definitely not wire wheels); some people use rope like those doy toys/bird toys but I have to wonder about the strings. You can pick up things from a thrift store like big plastic trucks, barns or dollhouses -- just clean/sterilize them before use since you don't what germs some toddler has been coughing all over them linda

>> However if it got reversed with the narrow bit hanging down, it IS possible if all the circumstances where just wrong << I see what you mean. Can't you wrap the thing in duct tape (or will the rats eat it?) or whatever so that the space is too narrow for them to even get their heads and necks into? I could take a pair of pliers and spread it open - or will it still work in such a case? >> just clean/sterilize them before use since you don't what germs some toddler has been coughing all over them << That's for sure!! Wheels. For rats. What size is best, and do they use them? Thanks for the ideas. I have to get busy with that.

I'm not sure of the standard wheel sizes. The one I have is around 16" across. You want to get a really big one. Apparently they can actually have problems with their tails if they spend too much time in a too-small wheel. Chopin and Lennier didn't pay the wheel too much attention. Some rats love it, other don't really care. Here's the type I have, but I'd like to get a Wodent sometime. a Wodent Wheel (I think I'd name mine a Wodin Wheel hehhe) I'm not sure that that little plastic wheel is doing in the picture... : L.

>> danger, danger, will robinson! << Didn't you ever think the danger to Will came from Dr. Smith who I always thought a little "funny"? I mean, if he was YOUR son would YOU want him hanging around with that guy?? BTW, man, did the "Lost in Space" remake stink. 16" across, eh? OK. Thanks.

Well, on the bad side, you wouldn't want ANY child left with him On the good side, you could say he was rather childlike himself and was safe...maybe. Or maybe not Well it IS hard to compete with the likes of the original carrot monster MAN did I love that series! I can't bring myself to watch most remakes, that one included. I think I saw a few minutes on video a bit into the show, and it certainly wasn't enough to make me wish I'd caught the whole thing. Oh for an original idea in Hollywood.... Linda

Dr Smith was spoofed once on The Simpsons. It was at a SciFi convention and he started coming on to Bart, and Robbie started yelling "DANGER DANGER WILL ROBINSON!!". ;D I don't think you ever saw the remale. Dr. Smith ended up morphing into a giant half man-half spider. It reminded me of the horrid remake of "The Thing". Grossout nonsense.

BTW, about that hook. You ever consider spreading it apart with pliers?
