Her teeth look nice & pearly white now! From the pic you showed us, is your sister's dog a Dachshund?

WOw her teeth weren't even all that bad, it is good for them to go in for dentals. When I worked at the vet, I saw some teeth that were so bad, the plaque that coated them were the only thing keeping the teeth in place. When you took the tool to scrape off the plaque you got the tooth too. Cognac

Yes, it's one of her 3 dachshunds.
This one just showed up on her doorstep one day - it had been dumped in her neighborhood, and was very obese. My sister put her on a diet, and then her back went out, so she had water therapy for a month.
Her last 2 dachshunds, Heidi and Inga both died from kidney failure, possilby from not getting their teeth cleaned often enough, so her current three (Ginger, Hans and Gretchen) get them done regularly.

Kidney Failure can even be caused by dog food. The majority of vets don't know that some "high quality" food is bad food with a big price. Science Diet is bad food in disguise, so are many others. Do a google search of Dog Food and Rendering Plants. Assuming the dogs don't get homemade food, or already high quality "unheard" (most not willing to pay the price) food. Cognac

Aww...that's so sad when people just decide to dump or abuse their dogs! I hate it! Thats good that your sister took her in! I HATE it times a hundred. That applies to hamsters and gerbils too, obviously. Those teeth don't look that bad before the cleaning. They look great after! Kissable! I assume Ginger was sedated. Dachshunds. When in grad school I once was invited with some other seminar students to a prof's house, as is the European custom (he being from Germany), at the end of the semester. Had a nice time, but his little dachshund kept gently gnawing/sucking on my fingers all night. My digits were all "pruned up" afterward! Nothing like having a discussion - with your fingers halfway down a dachshund's throat. A cute gentle dog, though.

Wow. I had no idea. I thought it was just a matter of halitosis, dental hygiene, and gum disease.

Funny story, DR. I grew up with dachshunds and love them They were sedated. (Anybody notice that I posted mostly off-color pictures today???) That prof's name is Hans Trefousse, and easy to find with a Web search. He emigrated from Germany as a Jewish child with his family just before WW II; during that war he became a translator/interogator, and also a war hero winning the Silver Star for negotiating the surrender of a large group of Germans early in 1945. The kicker was they were SS Germans, not Wehrmacht - and thus were Nazi fanatics with no liking for Jews. A great scholar and good man, Trefousse; he would have been my advisor if that dissertation thing got going, but did not for reasons I told you (lack of primary papers). One day I'll tell you about Prof. Kiraly, the prof who spent five years on death row. (Or did you hear this one already?). I wonder if he had a Mister Jingles. ;D Or Prof. Syrett, the foul-mouthed drunk. Among many other oddballs. I don't suppose your dachshunds sucked your digits like that one did to me. I never complained; it was kind of cute and a nice wet warm feeling. But my fingertips really pruned up. The oddest skin anomaly in my experience was a very sensitive-skinned female many years ago who the next day ended up with glowing pink beard burn. Figure it out. ;D >> (Anybody notice that I posted mostly off-color pictures today << I think a lot of my stories are off-color. But yea, the tint looks off. That can be fixed of course in a photo program, but why it happened I am sure you will tell us.
