hi wasn't sure what section to put this into so i figure i'll put it in here and it'll get moved if i'm wrong i don't know if any of you have experienced this with any of your animals (guinea pigs especially) but, with one exception (and he was on it for a long time), all the guinea pigs that have been ill and been put on Baytril, have died. this is an observation over a few years and i only just thought to see if anyone else has experienced similar "side effects". i don't know the exact number that we've had die after being given Baytril but probably in the region of 6-8. coincidence? i know g pigs can't have penicillin, but what about Baytril? its a favourite at my local vet anyone else? curious is all Angel

Baytril is not in the penicillin family. I have no idea about the efficacy of Baytril when administered correctly to Guinea Pigs. The only time I ever used it was on my Syrian, Princess, and she survived despite looking very dehydrated and having the runs (I may have given her to much lettuce, but I don't know). Of course she died of a stroke six months later. You may want to post this where there are lots of GP lovers, such as petshub.com/forums. In the GP forum. I would also ask your vet for reference material and sources on the efficacy of Baytil on GP's.

I haven't had much luck with Baytril - I've had 2 hammies die after being on it, but it's hard to say if it was the baytril or something else. I have heard that some GP's don't do well on it either. It made Puck lose his appetite.
It didn't seem to bother the gerbils though.

Is Baytril merely an Urban Legend? Does it actually work?
There must be some sources other than anecdotal to demonstrate efficacy. I hope someone has time to spend doing a Web search, because I do not.

hi i searched for baytril on the net. it is known to cause blindness in cats and was originally developed to treat ear infections in dogs. could only find one reference to guinea pigs and that was to say that someone's pig had recovered from an illness after using baytril. a pig breeder my mum has recently been in contact with has said that she's never had problems with baytril and that her pigs are always put on it when they're ill so its just our pigs then hmmmmm ok angel

OK! Thanks.
How effective it is with hamsters I guess we'll have to keep researching.
