One of the favorite, and most cherished, animals at the Bronx Zoo was the very rare Sumatran rhino - Rapunzel. This type of rhino is very endangered, and she was one of the oldest in captivity. She recently became hopelessly ill, and was euthanized today. She was always very sweet. These photos were taken just a month ago.

Aww...poor girl.
They definitly look different then the Black/White Rhinos. Is the Sumatran Rhino related to the Black Rhino? I only ask b/c their mouths (lips area) look exactly the same. That's one area where you can tell Black from White Rhinos apart.

They are all rhinos; they are related.

I didn't mean it that way. Just like the hyrax and the elephant are related to each other (who look nothing alike too); I was asking is there any relationship (I guess is the word) to the Black Rhino? White Rhino is a different species as I get it.

For information on this type of rhinoceros, CLICK HEREIf anyone knows, they will know - about ALL types of rhinos on that site. Hyraxes always reminded me of a cookie - the Hydrox oreo-like cookies! Get it? Hyrax, hydrox? Here are your hyrax, from the Prospect Park zoo in Brooklyn:

Thanks for the site. Wow, they have a hyrax...that's cool. I have to go back to our zoo to see if they have one; I just remember the primary ones there.
Lol-you're silly. ;D

>> "He could not be idle, though. When he no longer felt ill, he had a block and paper at his side at all times, so he could scribble things. He established a bird bath and a bird feeder in front of his verandah and spent hours watching the bright-coloured birds that descended on them. He adopted a couple of hyrax as pets and greatly enjoyed their antics. << www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Geyser/5770/nyeri.htmlOn a sad note, if you read that site the Sumatran rhino is in bad shape. They might want to consider grabbing enough of them and keeping them in zoos to maintain a viable gene pool, before it is too late.
