I read an article in Newsweek today. . . . it talks about how movie DVD producers are putting inserts into their DVDs that are aimed at cautioning viewers who might want to run out and buy the dog breed featured in the movie. There were runs on (and then massive abandonments of ) Dalmatians with "101 Dalmatians" in 1996, and the same with huskies after 2002's "Snow Dogs." So now Disney has told purchasers of "Eight Below" to do research before buying a husky, and in "The Shaggy Dog" viewers are cautioned that bearded collies aren't for everyone. While this shows the extent to which some people need to be saved from themselves , if it helps curb the number of unwanted dogs, then it's a good move.

That's good. I saw the peice of paper in the dvd of "Eight Below" saying how if someone wants a Husky, they really have to show them that they're the pack leader.
People think the dogs will come out like the dogs did in the movie and they won't. Those dogs were well trained and got that way with a lot of training and practice. You have to show the dog that you're the leader unless you want a unruly dog in your house.
Good job to the dvd producers. Hopefully people will listen to them.

Disney took a lot of flacik for NOT doing anything regarding dalmatians after that movie. And that includes dalmatian rescue contributions they apparently did not make. So it is a good move - but way late. People are so stupid.

People are so stupid. Amen to that LOL.... Though, i do think that informing the watchers is a great way to start. It's just REALLY sad that the human race still would jump on some band wagon of buying animals just b/c they saw it on TV

My sister (the one that hates people like Andrea does--recall her response to the dog-thrown-out-the-window story?) sent me a story and pictures today. A guy decided to camp alone in the high Yukon in polar bear territory. A bear tore into his tent and attacked him. He was badly injured, but he still managed to shoot and kill the bear. The story's take is that he's lucky to be alive. Her and my take on it is that he was an idiot. So of course after relating this she wrote, "I hate people."

I agree with you & your sister, he's an idiot. He's camping in their territory, of course the Polar Bear is going to defend it's territory. Animals always do.

Too bad the bear lost. It was the human's fault not the bear's.
See Animal Rescues forum in a few minutes for a story about GOOD people.
