Interesting, I do have a few questions:
1)Doesn't everyone know if you don't socialize the animal, it will shy away from you or possible bite? I know I know this.
2) As animals are tamed & socialized, they get used to human contact, even their babies will b/c the parents are socialized. So why do they need an experiment for this?
3) I read all of it & understood most of it. So basically they're trying to find genes that will make them understand domestication right?

(1) We tend to think of tameness as a learned behavior rather than an innate characteristic. The article is saying that tameness seems to be rooted in genetics. Tame animals can be produced through selective breeding--no socialization necessary. Foxes were produced that had the characteristics of pet dogs.
(2) Without the experiments involving many generations of animals, the genetic link can't be demonstrated.
(3) Yes.
Thanks for reading, Katie!

You're welcome & thank you for further explaining it to me, Robin! I'm slow with some stuff.

No, not slow--you're just thinking and asking good questions! ;D (Can you tell that I'm not one of those nasty professors that calls students stupid if they ask any question at all?? )

I've never heard of a teacher call a student stupid before. I always get "no question is stupid", have I've learned? No. I bet you're a great teacher Robin! You got me interested in birds when I never was!

I never called a student "stupid". A "wiseass clown", yes. What if the rats were NOT also bred for ferocity? How ferocious would "normal" rats be left on their own? I say not at all; nervous, yes, but not ferocious in the slightest. That is why a movie such as "Willard" was absurd - an army of rats does this psycho's bidding against his enemies! "TEAR HIM UP!!!".
