Gay and lesbian activist groups forced a German zoo to scuttle its attempted use of sexy Humbolt female penguins to lure some seemingly gay male penguins into straight sex.
The zoo in Bremerhaven brought in some girl penguins to see if their presence would stop six of the zoo's male birds from trying to mate with each other. When news of the plan hit the media, gay rights groups set the zoo's phone lines aflame, in a sense.
"All sorts of gay and lesbian associations have been e-mailing and calling in to protest," a spokesman for the zoo told The Scotsman. The paper also noted "the birds had fooled their keepers for years into thinking they were boy and girl pairs."
At first the zookeepers said they would resist, contending they really needed to have the penguins get on with some real reproduction and give up the gay lifestyle, which included heartbreakingly vain attempts at incubating rocks.
In the end, the officials bowed to the pressure.
The zoo director, Heike Kueck, stressed she wasn't planning to try forcing the pigeons into heterosexual behavior. In fact, she said it might not have been possible. Although the males didn't show much interest in the female newcomers, the director noted the ladies arrived after the birds' mating season had passed.
"Nobody here is trying to break-up same sex pairs by force," Kueck told a public broadcast station. "We don't know if the three male pairs are really gay or just got together because of a lack of females."
There is a lesson here. Something to do with the effect of always wearing of dapper clothing - tuxedos, in fact - even to casual affairs.
