What is weird and ironic about him is that he killed many thousands of birds both as a hunter and to have specimens for his paintings. He even stabbed a golden eagle through the heart to have a quiet specimen!! Later, he had a change of heart, and his name was used for the Audubon Society that fought the fashion a century ago of women decorating their hats with dead egret and heron feathers. that was the first campaign ever of its nature. The fight goes on on different fronts. . .

But it is on again Sunday at 2--I will try to catch it then.

I only stumbled on it last night by chance.
His giant sized folio of hand-colored bird prints (life size), cost a thousand dollars over 150 years ago! It was a major status symbol of the ultra-rich and libraries to be able to afford something so very expensive.
I suppose a thousand dollars then would be worth 50x as much now, or more.
