I had Fuzz out tonight, and he was running on the bed around my boyfriend and me. At one point he was behind my boyfriend's motionless arm or leg (can't remember which now), and I saw him "spaz out" and change direction real fast. When I looked to see where he went I found him slightly under the comforter and absolutely "frozen." He was standing but not moving at all; when I touched him he did not react; he seemed to be staring into space. This persisted for a full 1.5-2 minutes, during which time I had the opportunity to be scared. I'd seen "freezing" before, but not like this and not right after such sudden movement. Ultimately his nose started to wiggle and he slowly came out of it, and soon he was scampering around like nothing had happened. Relief! Anyone have an experience like this?? I would guess that this behavior would have some survival advantage in the wild (hide and don't make a sound. . .).

Survival advantage, indeed. I have read about these things happening to hams, and even saw posts about it elsewhere, but I have never had it happen to me with any animal. I guess no one is scared of me enough to freeze! I have also heard of freezings due to some "epileptic" episode. *shrugs* I can't ever recall seeing it here. Sadly, when mine stop moving it is forever. Glad Fuzz is fine.

Thanks for your input. I put him back in his wheel after the episode; he took four sunflower seeds from me and snatched the cheese from his fresh-food dish, then disappeared--all very normal and predictable behaviors. . . Ham and cheese--yep, they go together!

My rats love warm pizza, and tortilla shells covered in ranch sauce, and chickory, and peas, and crambled eggs, and peanuts, and most anything! Oddly the girls are much more finnicky than the guys.

The only time that has ever happened to me, Robin, was when my Mom accidentally dropped poor Theo. We picked her up and she was motionless, but was fine later. We stroked her and then she was okay after receiving tons of kisses and hugs. But why Fuzz did that I have no idea. That's good that he's okay now.

i have never experianced nything ike that, though i know it happenedss. Even a hamster can "freeze" in cold whether but if held warmly and "relive".
I think its pretty interesting!
