I always wondered why some breeds were AKC registered and some were not.
At the Dog Show this week I asked the Swedish Vallhund (new breed this year) people why and how they got accepted. Basically, they made it clear AKC recognition depends on NUMBER of dogs, NUMBER of breeders, HOW MUCH breeding they do, and what kind of "unified front" they present to the AKC. Some dog breeds can be added; some can be dropped, although they could not recall which if any were dropped.
So AKC recognition has nothing to do with the age or uniqueness of the breed. The famous and very old Mexican Hairless, among others, is NOT recognized by the AKC for that reason.
Just FYI!
