BARK WORSE THAN ITS BYTE NY Post Wire Services January 17, 2008 -- Watch your mouth, Fido! Scientists are doggedly working on a computer that can translate barks, British media reported yesterday. Researchers at a Hungarian university recorded 6,000 barks from 14 sheepdogs in different situations, then turned the sounds into computer bytes. The digital Dr. Doolittle was most successful translating barks that mean "I'm ready for a fight" and "Watch out, there's a stranger around." It had more trouble with the "I'm ready to play" bark. The scientists also performed a second test, asking the computer to recognize individual dogs by their barks. The computer did better than humans, suggesting that there are elements in a bark not recognizable to people. The findings appeared in the journal "Animal Cognition." www.nypost.com/seven/01172008/news/worldnews/bark_worse_than_its_byte_662605.htm

Interesting. But if you know your dog or have been around them, you can tell by their body language what they're telling you.
