I GOT A HAMMY! This time its not a dwarf, its a syrian, my first syrian! I had her for about a week now, cleaned the cage for the first time today. PICS OMG the lid is off What? The floor is soft, its CARPET! weeeeeeee Blury i know Taming is going slow. I used to being tame withen 3 days with my dwarfs(i have no idea why most websites say it takes longer then syrians) She is a jumpy one. I need to pick her up to place her beck in her cage but every time she is cuped she pops out, so i end up trpping her against my body in my hands. I got her nitra puffs, a very good treat that sasuke(my favorist dwarf ever) loved, darn gos to waste. Ok one problem... At the pet store they didnt have any bottles for water just bowls. I got a cage with a bottle. I hate water bowl, they could fall in and bedding gets inside and gets all wet. So My little girl doesnt know howww to drink out of it. Every once in a while i make the botle drip, either on her or the bedding, but its not working. She ends up licking the wet bedding for water. any ideas to help her oh and i dont know a name yet, im stuck between... chibi (chee-be) yuiko (you-ee-koh) thx so much

Chibi. Congratulations! A week isn't a long time for taming. Speaking of photos, I took some of Butterscotch (formerly called Copper) . The problem is there is a several second lag time between when I press the shutter and the flash goes off. That means he is moving and I have to keep keep the camera moving to follow him until the flash goes off. Hard. Many wasted shots, but I got some good ones. Flash - and the closeup (macro) setting) - need to be used. Some pet store! No waterbottles?! Right now I have a rescued mouse in a small tank with a bowl. That bowl is only 2 inches in diameter and ceramic - impossible to know over. It is maybe an inch deep. I can't use a bottle as the tank is too small; it would almost touch the bedding. I may be able to Velcro a small bottle with a diagonal spout to the side, tomorrow. As of now, I change the bowl once or twice a day, It works for now. I have no idea what else to use other than glass, and I would NOT use glass as it can break. >> a very good treat that sasuke(my favorist dwarf ever) loved, << If you still have your cat be sure you keep it away from the ham, please. Best wishes.

well one way or another i came up with an idea so hammy can drink and i can still trian her. The cage came with a food bowl that can attach easly to the cage. see? I like this one cause it cant noke over easily and its small for her not to fall in. so there is still a bottle in there so she can eventually get to know it, and i can come in there once or twich a day bring the bottle to her mouth. Then i got one of my old food bowls for the food. oh and this is the improved cage Onee more thing, i named the little girl yuiko. I just loved the name cause it was a girl from my favorite manga/show ^.^

Looks like a type of Crittertail habitat. I have a Crittertrail Classic, a CT1 (for a mouse) and a CT2 (which a Syrian in it). The first two have waterbottles just like that - be sure the ham doesn't pile up bedding directly under it so that the water drains into the bedding. Those bottles are tricky to refill but you will get the hang of it. Usually, they come with a metal sleeve at the end - be sure the plastic part is DRY when you put the metal sleeve back on or it might slip off if pulled on by the ham. That tube is too long. Cut off about a third. I also doubt if a ham can even fit in a paper towel tube. Go to the pet store and get a wider Chube. These type of habitats usually have yellow bowls that fit IN the yellow level. I don't get this bowl - it looks like it doesn't belong and can be knocked over too easily. The yellow ramp leads right up to it and that makes it seem like the ham could not even get on that yellow level on the right. It really seems like the bowl should be on the far side away from that ramp. (?) Don't let the wheel get jammed from too much bedding. I don't know it it is the right size as hams can differ in size. Otherwise, you seem to have matters under control. Keep us posted!

dont worryyy
i always dry the whole bottle before slipping on the cap
yuiko can fit through and turn around in the paper towl tube. Easily goes in and out.
At that agle the food bowl looks reallly big and right in front on the latter, but its not. She has some room to walk up the latter clear from the bowl. Plus she can pull herslef up on top of the "room" without that ramp.
i can eaily fill up the cage covering the poping out plastic thing (that keep the water/food bowl in place) without it touching the bottem of the wheel.
Everything is under control, i kepp a good look out, but thanks for the concern.

That's a cool looking CT; I was thinking of getting it for Chewie when I was looking for cages. And don't worry, your hamster will find out how to use the water bottle (when you get one).
Yuiko sounds like a great/cute name! Does it mean anything? And your hamster is very cute.
I don't know why it says dwarfs can be trained in 3 days, our Harriet took months! Oh and that food bowl that attaches to the cage, just to tell you right now...it won't. Unless you can really get it down to stay. I've only made Chewie's bowl stay...once or twice. And then when you put bedding in the cage, it'll get in that hole. Trust me I have a CTX and it does the same thing. Try and find a water bottle, because those food bowls tend to drop and spill. Chewie eats out of there and always is tipping it over and that's just his food.

if you look i do have the water bottle in there already, along with the bowl.
yuiko doesnt mean anything, just a name i like ^.^
im not used to taking my time slowly taming my hamster cause whenever i got a new dwarf it would be tame in like 3 days or so. Easy.
I hope sooner or later she will be getting better at human interaction. She is so jumpy whenever she smells my hand.

Noor was very jumpy in the beginning she would jump of my hand every time I picked her up, and now she's such a darling. She walks right on my hand when it's in her cage and since last week she likes giving kisses . I hope Yuiko will act the same!

well since im so impationt, i just do everything faster, and most of the time the hammy just goes along.
Within an hour im sticking my hand in there, letting it sniff it every 30 min. In the evening, i ofer treats. In the morning i hand treats in palm. later the second day in cupping him/her in the cage. At night or soon the next day the hammy is running all over me ^.^

Congrats, Hollie, on your new furry friend! I like Yuiko as a name. It seems very feminine. Enjoy!
