One of the white dwarf hammies I foster has lost most of the hair on her rump. I tried to get a better look at her last night, but that bag bit me LOL
She's still active, eating, playing and being quite normal (yes even the biting is normal). I had noticed the hair was thinning, ad I took it as over grooming or shedding, as the skin is a nice pink healthy tone, and there have been so sign of 'bugs'.
My friend said she finds some of the hammies she's had loose hair when they are old. And i do recall others mentioning that. i don't know if i'll be able to get a picture, I don't have any free time for another week, argh.
Anyways, anyone else seen this before?

I haven't seen it on the rump, but on the sides of a dwarf hamster. My Benny had that and she was two years old. We took her to the vet and I forget what they said but it wasn't anything serious for her. It doesn't sound like yours is serious, but you could call your vet just to make sure.

Never had it before. You checked the skin, and looked for tiny mites? Some mites are so small they are not visible. But if the skin looks good. . . I don't know.

I read more about this, and age seems to be a factor, also molting. I've already read giving a bit of crushed up yeast tablets are suposed to help.

Older hams have shown balding areas, but I've noticed that mostly with Syrians.

I took some pictures and ended up giving her treats so she wouldn't bite me when i handled her to check her all over. Oh and I wore a glove LOL Anyways, it looks like over grooming, and the hair is different lengths and the skin is a healthy pink. She doesn't itch a whole lot and lives a happy hamster life with her sister who has all her hair. So, here are the disturbing pictures.... Weird eh? They are rescues, and not even a week after taking them in, i had to have one put to sleep, who was very old and ill, we guessed maybe the mother of these two. We think cancer played a bit part in the poor hammies sickness. the other two are active, eat well, love the wheel and live in a 25 gallon aquarium (it's huge for 2 dwarfs).

You've searched for tiny mites? But some are microscopic.
Is the area spreading??
The worst balding situation I ever experienced was with Makeeda and Stanley - Cushings Disease. Search for that term if you wish on this board using the menu at the top of the page. I doubt if it is that though; that is a worst case scenario.
