Last night my boyfriend and I were walking in a mall and checked out a mall pet store. Lots of puppies. If there were kittens I don't remember them. Two chinchillas. And a rat, gerbils, GPs, and hamsters. There was a single Chinese ham. Lots of gerbils. There were "short hair hamsters" available for about $17. And there were two "short hair hamsters" (presumably both male, but I only could sex one) that were $4.99--a Halloween special! They were obviously older--they were larger and had robust testes.
Seeing those hamsters on sale really got to me. I felt very sorry for them and could only hope that they will go to good homes.
What happens to small furries that are not sold?

A pet store worker told me such sales sometimes result from someone unexpectedly dumping animals at an already overcrowded pet store - one store I know separates by gender (which I watch for).
I have a sticky thread up on this board: "What to do if you see a bad pet store". Right at the top of this forum.

Looks like you have a pet store to start asking questions about and talking to the manager. Something I regularly do.

Aw, poor animals. I would think that the animals not sold are sadly taken care of. That's what I thought I heard once. Hopefully good people buy those hamsters, etc.

Most of the animals just stay there until someone finally buys them. Thing is they probably don't tell the customer the animal is __ years/months old.

I have thought that many times.
Most stores keep them on display as long as possible, then eventually they get put into the back. From there (some pet stores) call a fostering place to keep them and other facilities.

I still say to speak to the supervisors and manager. I do, and I think I know what is going on at local places, and they seem OK, within reason. I do have a load of rats here as when they were born, well, going back to the pet store was NOT an option! You know. BTW, the rats will be a year old in several weeks! Their photos are still up from last November.
