July 20, 1969!
Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walk on the moon!
Two things about this great event.
The first words were, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for Mankind".
Armstrong butchered the line as it makes no sense. It should have been, ". . . one small step for a man. . .".
The last people to walk on the moon left in 1972. That is 36 years ago!! And no return is planned nor possible for a decade or more. Amazing, and rather sad.
It is also interesting that a PhD in Math from M.I.T. got the nickname "Buzz"! ;D

My cousin's lawyer, who practices in the tiny town my mother and he grew up in, is known to locals as Buzz or Buzzy. His real name is Lawrence.
Buzz Aldrin was Edwin Eugene Aldrin, Jr. at birth.
From Wikipedia:
<The nickname "Buzz" originated in childhood: his sister mispronounced "brother" as "buzzer" as a toddler, and this was shortened to Buzz. He made it his legal first name in 1988.>

I think what he said make sense. Many Americans wanted this day to come since they found out the Russians had put some satellites in space. I had a story where some kids went to the moon and they had some furry stowaways on board and the cats went with them to walk on the moon. The line said above I did too, but in a quirky way with the cats on board. Anyway, aren't we shooting for Mars now?

>> I think what he said make sense. << Who? Armstrong? It did not make sense grammatically. ".. .one small step for man. . . one small step for mankind" is basically the same thing. "Man = mankind". He should have said "a man". I think he knew he butchered the line as he paused right after "man", and then said "one giant leap. . .". Americans thought the Soviets were far head of us in the Space Race until about 1967. >> the cats went with them to walk on the moon. << They have little space suits for the cats, even for their tails? Mars? They are primarily going for the unmanned explorations, with robots. If Mars can be exploited, economically, it might promote eventually manned landings. But don't hold your breath. www.thespacereview.com/article/763/1The U.S. is working on a plan for 2012 release for a lunar outpost in 2020. There is another suggestion, by the head of NASA, that a Mars expedition could be launched in 2037. Cost? 11 billion. You can expect those figures to go way up!

In my story, the cats go in the suits with the humans. It's a short story, Dad wanted me to write one and so since he liked space I did it on that. I can't remember all of the cats names, but I made the character name them after famous pilots or astronauts.

Let's hope they wait and "go" in litter pans later. ;D
