A regular frequenter of the local pet store got evicted from his domicile (seriously) and had to give away his animals. I was in looking for a single female for a possible introduction to Penny (see other thread) and spotted these two alone in a tank - they had been dropped off by this fellow. One was sleeping on the other, and the are obviously brothers and very nice and peaceful. They are remarkably lovely: at first I thought they were goldens such as mine (Cliffy, and Penny), but the coloring is quite different. There is a lot more white, especially around the head and eyes; the claws/nails are not the same color as the fur but are purple (!); and the scrotal area is black (as with Jeannie's Pyke, which we discussed in another thread). So, as they are two close brothers, and as I was eating some canned octopus in marinara sauce while thinking of names, they will be called Romulus and Remus! The former has more white around the right eye, and a different personality than the more diffident Remus. It is easy to tell them apart. They will soon be involved in an attempted introduction to Whitey and Petey who are alone in a 20 gallon tank, the one Poppy the bunny came in. Hope it goes well. Meet Romulus and Remus! (Romulus on left) Remus, on the left, stands there like a linebacker waiting for the snap! Oh, here's the black scrotal area - for those interested in such things:

No idea how old they are - why I got them "two for one" with a free five dolar hide box thrown in! Yes, I asked about ages. If the pet store folks can find the fellow who was evicted they can ask him. I am posting these photos here and not in Relaxing Rodents as this is a descriptive thread of what was done; to wit, the following: INTRODUCTIONS! Neutral territory; everyone's belly got rubbed on the others' backs. I put on my weight lifting leather gloves with the fingertips exposed in case I had to break up fights. Whitey and Petey went in first, out of their 20 gallon tank. . . and then I added Romulus and then Remus. There was some butt sniffing, and then a lot of butt sniffing and spit swapping (sounds like an orgy) - but no hostility at all! Not the slightest show of aggression from anyone. For awhile R&R and W&P hung out more with each other, but there is less of that now, and they all sleep in a heap in the newly cleaned 20 gallon tank, which now has four gerbils in it, as it should, not just two. First contact! Notice how much bigger Petey is. In the 20 gallon tank: Whitey is in the background, and Petey up close checking me out. R&R are hiding in the back left rear area still more comfortable with each other. I have subsequently added cheap chew things such as wooden spoons. The SAM wheel is attached to the screen top, as are other wooden chews, and they could be seen with the top on. The odd-looking thing on the left halfway to the back is a one dollar wooden foot massager! (Whatever is good to chew).

Sounds like things are going well. Petey really does like quite large next to the others.

Nutmeg! Maybe so! Quite a nice color. I am lucky I found them.
>> Also the younger Nutmeg looks different than the older one. Young Nutmegs have a warm orange-brown colour, all over. The eyes are black and the nails are dark horn coloured. When the animal is about 10 weeks old, and changes its youth fur for adult fur, the animal changes completely. The new fur is darker, the hairs have heavy ticking. The Nutmeg can have white lines on his throat and front paws, like the black and lilac gerbils. <<

On the other hand, why not a dark-eyed honey? >> The young Dark Eyed Honey (DEH) looks different than the older one. Until about 10 weeks, the DEH is orange/yellow coloured, with a white belly. Around the eyes and ears the fur is of a lighter colour. The eyes are black, so are the nails. The skin at the ears, nose, genitals and tail is dark. When the animals get older, the hairs at the back get ticking, although there are also animals that have lesser ticking. Also the fur gets more orange coloured when the animal gets older. Because of the light ticking, it looks like the animal walked through coal dust. <<

They do seem similar in coloration to my DEHs. I'll have to re-evaluate Sandy and Dusty (my DEHs) in light of the possibility they may be nutmegs.

I think I'd have to see a DEH and a nutmeg next to each other to really tell. (?).
