hello!!! my first semi-serious post my then-boyfriend bought me a pair of gerbils. one is a dove - the other a ?? my first thought was that he's a lilac but now i'm really not sure. maybe he's a little too "creamy" to be a lilac. i used to use a website called the gerbil colour pallette or something similar. thing is, now i cant find it. does anyone know its address? does it still exist? thanx in advance (oh, and am i supposed to introduce myself in a formal way? like a new thread telling you who i am? or do we just skip the formalities?) Hi, Glad to see you here. I think this is the link you mean: home.wtal.de/ehr/gerbils/colors.htmThere are no rules about introductions on this board - you can tell as much as you want, or not. It's up to you... Welcome! Sounds like you have a nice boyfriend.

hey thanx - that was the one. and yet i'm still confused. i reckon i've got them the wrong way round too. i always thought that lilac was lighter than dove. so maybe the one i thought was a dove is actually a lilac (she's darker) and my guy might be a dove. hmmmmm but then maybe he's too creamy and not "silver" enough <digs out all old gerbil books, blows off dust> anyhow, thanx a lot, and thanx for the welcome Angel

Angel Hi. Nice to have you here. This is another palette: users.bart.nl/~fredveen/colours1.htmNote: this can get so complex even the color sites did not help me ID my new guy. See the other thread on him in this forum. He is a very different type of DEH with a lightening gene.

Another problem is it's often hard to tell from pictures on computer screens, which can appear darker or lighter than they really are, depending upon the monitor and other factors.
Have you named the little guys yet? How many gerbils do you have now?

hey i've called them Sid and Nancy. my next pair will be Kurt and Courtney (going with the rock-couple theme here), tho becos of space at the mo, its gonna be a while til i get anymore. i've got another three groups, one of 4males (father and remaining sons from 2 litters - 2 black, 2 black pied), a pair of females (a siamese pied and a black pied, mother and daughter) and 3 old unrelated old females living together (introduced at around 8 weeks - albino (?), burmese and siamese pied). i've also got an old agouti female that won't go near any other gerbil without attempting to eat them, and an old black pied male (all on his lonesome, looking depressed, want to get him a pair of baby males to keep him company but have to work on the space factor to get a bigger tank that'll house 3 gerbils) <counts on fingers> 13? its my own fault (except the new pair). i'll be able to house any babies i cant find homes for tho. can just about squeeze them in me thinks i see them in pet shops and just cant resist them. my mum's like it with guinea pigs.
i looked at the other post. the diluted DEHs are beautiful. are they a relatively new colour? thanx for the other wedsite too - i love looking at the pictures. but i think maybe my new pair are a dove and a lilac. wish i had some way of posting pics of them but i havent so...... oh well Angel

Cute names. Kurt and Courtney should be a fun pair. And wow - you really have a lot of gerbils! I've had a hard time in the past bringing home hamsters and gerbils, but recently have been cutting back on the number of pets I have, because my vet bills have been really high. Do you have any other animals?

. . . but recently have been cutting back on the number of pets I have, because my vet bills have been really high. I still think you've had bad luck with them, although your critters had very good luck being with you. My first six gerbils that are two years old this month ( Happy Birthday!) that I got from a breeder have not had a sick day once, although Crystal developed a slight allergy to aspen which cleared up almost immediately as she was taken off it. My point is, it seems highly unlikely that new young gerbils, hams, or mice would get chronically sick at all and surely not within a year or two.

i also have 4 mice. it doesn't matter how often i clean them out, they have a definite "mouse" smell to them. i've not had any vet bills for a while. i did have a mouse with a wonky head but he got better all by himself in 2 days. my flatmate did have one who looked as if she'd had a stroke. she got better on steroids and antibiotics that cost him around £20. he was well in love with that gerbil (she died about a month later) i've just realised i'm inthe library with frozen food in my bag!!! oops!! hot day, ice melting what pets do you have Jeannie?

But DF, since they have such a short lifespan, the chance of them getting sick within 2-3 years is higher than animals that live longer. I would rather not chance it, and don't want to have more animals than I can afford. I'm also getting my focus back on music. Incidentally, the gerbils seem to want to be a part of my recordings these days, because whenever I start to record, they start running in their wheels.
Angel, it sounds like you have a nice collection of rodents. How old are your mice? I now have 2 hamsters and 5 gerbils (soon to be 4 gerbils as soon as the little one with cancer is put to sleep.)

You can really start to worry when they start stuffing Carefresh in their ears when you start to warble.

That sounds like something my mom would say.
Actually Pleiades and Peasblossom were recorded last night - they are making nibbling sounds in a song I am working on about departed pets and how they never really leave us.

That sounds like something my mom would say. Let's not get testy! ;D I doubt if she would mean it ironically. I wonder if she would have gotten along with my always critical father. Nah, too similar. Actually Pleiades and Peasblossom were recorded last night - they are making nibbling sounds in a song I am working on about departed pets and how they never really leave us. Haven't heard nibbling sounds, although I do hear the occasional squeak. But Raven is a major squeaker - a much louder squeak than a gerbil's. Raven is a big favorite with a great personality, but she does squeak! Or perhaps I should say SQUAWK! Oddly, the personality of Theodora has changed. She used to be outgoing and friendly; now she is reclusive and not entirely eager to be handled. She no longer even hops up and down begging to be let out of her bin. I have not smelled her in season either in awhile. I think she has reached menopause!! ;D I suppose night sweats and headaches are next.

Cool - 5 months is still pretty young for mice. The one with cancer was put to sleep last night - poor little guy. The tumors were huge.
