www.courier-journal.com/article/20090416/DERBYFUN/904160368&referrer=FRONTPAGECAROUSEL(I can't remember if it's ok to post the actual article here, so I included only the link). According to this comment on the article, the rats are adopted at the end of the race: "Students and student groups learn proper techniques to teach these rats and they go through several months worth of training to get to the point that they can actually run around the mock race track on race day. I'd also like to point out that these rats are feeder rats - rats that would've, as babies, been used as food for snakes or other reptiles, so they've actually been given a new lease on life by being taken home as someone's pet after their racing days are over."

Technically, an entire article should not be posted, only highlights, and a link. I have a white rat here I got recently, Panini. I posted on all this. She likely is sister to Rangi and Kahini. is that genetically possible when the other two are B&W hooded rats?? I feel good timid Panini is here. For obvious reasons. >> The event is in its 37th year and pits teams of Spalding students, staff and faculty against one another to train their rats to race around a .024 furlong track. The races celebrate the end of the "rat race" of finals week and concludes a week's worth of events, such as a cereal-eating contest and a "Rat Hat" contest. . . . << continued in article. . . See photos on the site. >> Taryn Bellgard raised "Marilyn Monrat" in triumph after winning the Queen Wilson Run yesterday. The races celebrate the end of the "rat race" of finals week.<< >> Lauren Flood held "Ratalina Jolie" yesterday after winning the "Spalding Derby" at Spalding University's 37th annual Running of the Rodents. "Hard work and training," Flood said of getting her rat to the winner's circle. << "Ratty Balboa" was my favorite name. PHOTO GALLERIES LINK
