The play bin I have set up for Jayde is about 30 x 14 x 10 inches high. It's got a wheel, a McDonald's cup holder to climb on/in, some Carefresh, some shredded brown paper under which she sleeps, and one other thing. It's a little "hut" with no top, made from a commercial-size heavy-duty toilet paper roll with an opening cut in it. It's about 3.5 inches high. Well, Jayde finally "discovered" this thing and has been practicing pullups--she stands inside it and pulls herself up and over. (She has soooo much energy!) She has become quite good at this. . .
So anyway, on Tuesday night I was cooking some ratatouille on the stove, and I was playing with her. It was time to stir the pot, so I put her in a small plastic bin I have in the living room that has a somewhat broken top and that was her first play bin. I stirred the pot and then digressed to the computer and answered an email. All the time at the computer I had a weird feeling that maybe something was happening in the other room, but I didn't go check. However, when I did go back to the room, there was no Jayde in the bin!! Aack! I started to seal off the room (not easy since it has no doors, just door frames), and then I figured, "why don't you just look to see if she's obviously around?" And she was--behind the boom box among the wires for the DVD player and TV set. So she hadn't wandered far.
I put her back in the bin because I wanted to see what she did to escape. Well, she made use of two of her strongest skills: the jump and the pullup. She jumped up toward the broken, slightly lower edge of the bin (about 5.5 inches high), grabbed on, and pulled herself up and over! I had never seen her do that in that bin before, or even try it, even though she's been a jumper all along. Had she been practicing those pullups with the intention of a great escape?? :-)
So if I put her in that bin temporarily I will have to move her to the kitchen or wherever and keep an eye on her!
