My Mallory and her family were found behind a bird store in the rain. My Jayde and her family came from an SPCA raid on a kennel. And now their rescue mommy Stacey is dealing with yet another dwarfie drama. She wrote me the following today.
>>Hope you are doing well. I had to email you to let you know of Paws2Learn's latest hammies....
I got a call on Sunday evening from someone who fosters (and has adopted) from us. She saw 2 tanks sitting on the side of the road, so she was going to pick them up. When she went to get them, the tanks were all cracked and messed up. Then, she saw a 3rd tank (evidently more towards a person's house). This tank had 13 (yes 13) dwarf hammies in it. The sign originally said hamsters $1.00, but then the $1.00 was crossed out and it said 'free'.........so she took the whole tank.
Then, she called me, kind of in a panic, but she said she couldn't leave them there. So, we now have 13 dwarf hammies (I don't have all of them here, only 6 of them).....
Gail and I went up yesterday to sex them (all females will have to be on maternity watch), and to divide some....5 are staying with the lady who found them (3 she is keeping, 2 she is fostering), 2 went with Gail to get looked over by the vet (they had little lump type things on them, probably wounds from fighting, but we want to make sure).....and then 6 came with me.....
I have to recheck them, make sure girls are girls and boys are boys again....but, they had to be separated. Because there were so many in the tank, I think they got aggressive toward each other. Lots of screaming and fighting when she found them........<<

Stacey wasted no time in posting them--and so she posted the only photo she had. They look terrible, but she explains their condition in the blurb, so hopefully no one will think that her rescue takes terrible care of their animals. . .
What was in the tank was a reptile rock with a hole for water, filled with scummy water, and a dish with water in it and a few pieces of green pepper. That was the ONLY food in the tank. The hams are wet in the photo because they were in there with all that water.
People are idiots.
AND: five of the 13 are on maternity watch. Can you imagine if all five have sizable litters?? I may become a foster mommy yet. . .
