It's been a while since I've been on RR; sorry for that. Some of you may remember my posts as a newb about our ratties - we ended up with 3 because it seemed we'd become the "rat rescue" for Northwest Arkansas. We love(d) all our girls. I have some bad news. Dizzy was the first rat that came to live with us about a year ago. She was probably a little over a year old. Unfortunately, she had developed those mammary tumors and they finally got to where they were impeding her comfort and mobility. We needed to take some vacation and the place where we board the girls is one of the few "rat friendly" vet/kennels in the area. We told the vet (who is a fine surgeon, by the way) that the tumors probably should be removed and since it's a good idea to spay while that's going on to prevent further tumor development (and we had some behavior stuff, too), we authorized that to be done, too, while we were gone. Well, Dizzy "coded" during surgery on Friday, suffering a cardiac arrest. The doctor got Dizzy's heart going again via direct stimulation and epinephrine but that only lasted about 5 minutes before her heart stopped again and she could not be revived. Dizzy didn't survive. So we had another little rattie funeral on Sunday. Just wanted to let somebody know and you all (despite my absence) are my rodent family and i wanted to write about it here. Thanks for reading, bob

Aw, Dr. Bob I'm so sorry about Dizzy. May she rest in peace and I hope you're holding up well. Just try to remember the happy times with her. So sorry again.

>> we'd become the "rat rescue" for Northwest Arkansas. << I thought from your e-mail you were in Montserrat. Sorry about Dizzy. Glad you had a respectful funeral. I need to have another soon for various littler guys and gals. Tell me, did the tumors have anything to do with the cardiac arrest, or was it just bad luck from the anesthesia? I assume this vet is experienced with rats.

You came to the right place for condolences. . . . we all can relate. So sorry about Dizzy (fun name--did she have a behavior that made you name her that?). Rest in peace, rattie girl. You were very loved.

Thanks, everyone. You came to the right place for condolences. . . . we all can relate. So sorry about Dizzy (fun name--did she have a behavior that made you name her that?). Rest in peace, rattie girl. You were very loved. My son named her. Her head-weaving back and forth from trying to see what was going on beyond her sight distance was so pronounced, he said "she looks like it makes her dizzy". It was a good name. >> we'd become the "rat rescue" for Northwest Arkansas. Fun. Most people think I'm pulling their leg when I give a .ms TLD; they think that can't be possible. "Do you mean dot-microsoft?" Uh, no. But as you might guess, my last name (Irvin) was already taken for .com. But my provider let me register for Montserrat. So I've used that for years. Truly I believe she had issue with the anesthesia. My post makes it sound like Dizzy was just over a year old. But the truth is, she was over a year old when we got her and we had her just over a year. So maybe she was too old for this procedure; I don't know. But the vet seemed to think it was a good idea. Who knows. I do know that those girls are treated like rock stars when we have to board them. Our only comfort is that we know Dizzy (and the others) were well-treated while they were there. That helps. We felt so helpless when Oreo died so this could have been an emotional disaster for all of us. Fortunately, we're trying to continue seeing the positive aspects of having improved Dizzy's life for the time she had. Thanks again, bob

>> my provider let me register for Montserrat <<
Ah! Can he let me register with an .aq?? That is Antarctica. ;D Cooool!
I have recently posted in Rabbits (a few months ago) and Other Pets (a week or so ago) about Poppy the sick rabbit and Heather the missing cockatiel. I was extremely distracted and worried, as I posted. So I know.

Exactly.
Sorry, again.
Don't be a stranger.
