Maybe you can explain to your parents the responsibilties that you have & that you can indeed take care of a gerbil (s). Say how you'll take care of them, pay for the bedding/cages/food/vet bills (just in case), etc. Maybe then your parents will start to see how you can take care of an animal. Also do some chores. Show that you are a responsible owner & can take care of yourself & an animal. Read materials about them so you know more about a gerbil. If you think you can handle one, tell your parents a plan that you have about keeping the gerbil (s). To me, I think this would work. But don't bug your parents about it, chances are if you keep antagonzing them, they'll keep saying no. So read about them, develop a plan on how you can take care of them (ex: school/work & being with your gerbil), and do some chores & show responsiblity. I think this will work. Btw...how old are you? Do you think your ready to take on a pet? Even though it's fun to have a pet, you do have to work to make sure they have food, clean bedding, and fun, etc. Good luck.

My father never let me keep a pet. If you love animals you can always help by volunteering with local humane or rescue groups.

My father never let me keep a pet. If you love animals you can always help by volunteering with local humane or rescue groups. A VERY good idea. All those animals need someone to love and care for them, it's great experiance and you can proove your responcible, and learn all sorts of stuff from the experiance. I volunteer for a animal rescue, and we have a girl who's only 8 who comes out with her Mom and helps with bunny days, and Bunny rescue, plus Dog walking at the SPCA. Read lots about the animal you want, I used to write papers on the animal and how i could care for it when i was young. Now it's not always going to work, My Dad didn't let me have pets when i was a kid either, but the more you learn about each animal, when your old enough to get your own you'll be a super owner! Oh - And you can also try Pet Sitting from Family & Friends pets also (PS - I didn't get my first gerbils untill I was 18, I'm 26 now and have 17 of them!)
