Well, it's been about six weeks since Jaydee Girl's been gone, and that's about the length of my usual mourning period. I did start looking around about two weeks ago for a rescued dwarfie but didn't find anything locally. But I found a hamster at a rescue in Maryland and inquired about her. Turned out that she had been adopted, BUT the rescue (one run out of foster homes, similar to Stacey's rescue) took in six agouti dwarfs that had been abandoned in a single small cage, and when I return from all my world travels (to AZ to see the bro' and then to MN for a conference) I will journey out to MD (2.5 hours each way) to check out these critters: lunashouse.org/furry.htmSo this won't be for another month, but this will allow time for Lisa at Luna's House to work on taming. In the meanwhile I need to bury Jaydee. That will be HARD. So that's how I hope to become a hamster mommy once more.

*HUGS* Sounds like a good plan, I wish u luck in your search.
I've also had my eyes open for another dwarf, I've been missing my Happy Gilmore, and the other dwarfies. I may wait though till another pet passes before really jumping into the search.

Sounds good. I have two dwarfies a yard in front of me as they squabbled too much. Now I'm used to them there. Cute critters on that site. Always wondered why you don't get two or more. Even mine are normally calm and there has never been blood or even a scratch. One just sits on the other! I once had four in a 20 gallon tank, which was cool.

My largest group was 5 males, Happy was the trouble maker and had to be removed, once he was the other four lives very happy together the rest of their hammy lives. I likes watching and interacting with the groups, but I've had two singles who have particular spots in my hearts, Happy of course being the #1 man, and Ayla being the next. I find bonding to a single critter much easier, though I feel bad when i don't have the 1 on 1 time for them some days when they are singles.

Well, Stacey (Jayde and Mal's rescue mommy) told me today that she's getting some hams from a humane society. She thinks they may be all Syrians, though. Anyway, this place has dwarfs too--I had seen them before on Petfinder and on their own site, but I thought they were located much further out than Luna's House, which is not actually true. The distances are about the same (a bit over 2.5 hours). I am a sucker for dwarfs with stories, which is the case with all the Luna's House hams, but for all I know these other hams have compelling stories too.
I can't do anything for a month, and the situation will likely change--maybe some of the hams will have homes by then and there won't be so many choices!
But as to your comment, DF: Jayde and Mal had been mommies, but they prove non-compatible with their youngsters, so they had to be loners.
I have always enjoyed the experience of having one critter to shower my attention on, so I relate to Andrea's comment about bonding.

One critter. Well, I think of the other needy critters. Just my thing.
And I remember Syrians are likely harder to place as they are bigger, more common, and must be kept alone.
Whatever works for you.

Now that I have oen gerbil, compaired to 20+ I find i can give this guy so much more then i did when I had many, it feels great to be able to spoil him, where as before i could not afford to spoil so many. My lone Degu Bruce, also get's much more spoiled them my 4 boys, So i tend to try adn give mnore to the singles then i do my otehr critters who have companions.

I can give more to singles. But the ones who are left unrescued and unloved would always haunt me.
