I posted about this a few minutes ago in the Memorial thread in the Jiggs thread after Guggenheim also died.
When you get a new critter always keep them in isolation from others for a few weeks, and keep their habitat in a different room if feasible.
Inspect them closely after that period, and when you first get them. Look for any health anomalies, and especially look for mites or fleas in the skin.
If such problems are found, "8 in 1" makes a spray I've used for a long time. I rub it in as per directions. To avoid the chance of a nip, use a plastic utensil or such to rub it in under the belly and chin.
After several minutes I wipe some off, and also sometimes risne the animal in warm water, and then pat dry with a paper towel. Otherwise they will ingest the chemical while grooming.
And be ever vigilant, especially if there is a change in activity level or eating habits. If so, inspect! Some problems move very fast.

Not a good day, the past 24 hours. I lost another rat, Jennie, but the other two I also treated are looking good.
Had a long talk with the pet store about being on guard for mites, but who knows where this bunch came from.
*yawns* Another long busy day. No time for a lot of things, and I have some more tanks to clean. . .
Spent hours cleaning out tanks and related work.
Got some permethrin powder for the bedding. Sigh. A big hassle.

Oh, my--a third. Sorry to hear this. What do you think she passed from? Or was she a senior citizen?

Not especially. It was those damn fast-moving mites; the spray treatment was apparently too late or whatever. Two others, in separate tanks, I just looked at and they are fine after treatment. I will still use Permethrin GRANULES in the bedding. They don't make powder anymore--too dusty (a danger). IVERMECTIN is another option for treatment, orally. I can only assume this is meant as a prophylactic as using it when mites are finally seen may be too late. The roper dosage is also tricky. Read loads about it. Meanwhile, I continue to look for fancy rat breeders. www.guinealynx.info/ivermectin.html
