This is very concerning for me...is it possible to have poisoned my Dwarfs by feeding them Black Oil Sun Flowers Seed meant for bird feeders... Two of them were very active and playful prior to the ingestion of this feeding, within 48hrs both died...!!! I am very disturbed by this...is there something in the seeds that they couldn't handle chemically or did they just OD on yummy sun flower seeds... I also read somewhere that there is a problem with whole corn in feed...that is was found to have been treated or altered and causes tumors, in I believe rats they tested it on...!!! Anyone else seen or heard of this study that was recently put out...

I'm sorry about your hamsters dying. I haven't heard of that; I always assumed that the seeds were from bird seeds too. Perhaps you can also ask your vet.

I'm sorry for your loss. Unless the seed was treated with something I don't see where it would have been a toxin. How many seeds were eaten by the hamsters? What other possible causes of death might there have been? Other foods? Illness? What happened in the 48 hours between ingestion and death? How did they behave?

I had two (F) in one bin, they got along great from birth and were best buds...!!! Approximately six months old, both very active and very friendly (Handling)...no sign of illness in either before the final feeding. First, they were given a dish with enough of the seeds to share without fussing at each other, this was at around noon, and there were even seeds left in the dish through out the day...the next day I noticed Sweet Pea was very lethargic and breathing was labored, she was cold and not responsive to attention given, wouldn't accept water on finger either...later that night she passed, all the while her sister Sunflower, stayed with her and by her side...! Sunflower was acting sluggish and not as active within this period also, and was unresponsive by the following afternoon and passed by evening. I do have to note that this Black Oil Sun Flower Seed was given to all my hamsters (28) and none of the others died or showed signs of illness. On a side note the first two had only the mentioned seeds in their dish, the others were given a few in their bowls with their other mix.

I can't come up with any ideas based on your reply. I'm sorry again for your loss.
