I finally took the plunge, this after years of thinking about getting rats. I discussed elsewhere in this forum about wether to get a male pair or a female pair. You can read here, and on www.adoptaratcanada, and elsewhere the pros and cons. Difficult choice. But last night a trusted pet expert advised me of her experience with established males becoming aggressive with each other many months alter. She was also a little out off by the size of their testicles (!) but that wasn't much of a concern for me. I wish these two were different colors; their male companions (brothers?) were chocolate brown and brown with a lot of white. I think one of these girls is slightly darker than the other. True? I may need a little food dye and put a spot somewhere, but I expect soon to get used to their different personalities. After getting them I went to another nearby pet store and played with them. One was a little nervous, and the other much less so; in fact, soon she became quiet and cuddly and just rested on my chest as I petted her. Their fur is very soft, more so than I expected. They are much tamer than most other rodents, and I just got them! There you have it. Two new rats - and they need names! Considering what I've said and how they look, any ideas? Would their color be some sort of "champagne"?? The first two are of the same rat.

Very pretty! Congratulations! Maybe look up names of champagnes and then name them after some fancy bottles?

Oh, my my! So they're born with short tails. You seem excited, not overwhelmed. That's good. Well, you wanted rats--now you've got them in spades! Good luck with them.

You didn't say if you prefer Moet and Chandon, or Blanc and Rose for names! They are born surprisingly dark red.

Blanc and Rose would be my choices, but what do others think?

I've pretty much already deciided several hours ago on Moet and Chandon, but thanks for the input. I can't really properly write out Rose - it always look like "rose" the flower and I have to explain.

>> How to supervise the nursery. << Care to tell me about this? I didn't know supervision was necessary. . . any info on your site? I will likely not keep all of them - depends on color and gender, and how certain I am the person who gets them does right by them, and I am virtually certain she will.

Since I've never had females nor babies I don't have any first hand knowledge. The only things I've seen come up a few times in YahooGroups discussions are to check for a "milk band"....apparently the little tummies will show the milk through them, after a feeding, so you may want to check to make sure they are getting enough.
I don't believe that the info Jen put together on my site includes baby care, but I can check.
