I understand that rats normally have a gay ole time ripping up papers for their nest. My new boys don't get it! The old ones did! Hugh has started to get the hang of moving bits around, but that's about it! lol He brings them into the nest, but they sit on them and flatten them. If I try to give them something fluffy, like crumpled paper towel, or some fabric, they kick it out of the nest! They seem to like spartan sleeping quarters!! I've also added a pile of fabric for them to sleep on the bottom of the cage, since they like it down there. Usually, they kick it all aside (as well as the Yesterday's News) and sleep on the hard bottom! Go figure. linda

lol.. That's the same for my Degus! I've given them boxes to sleep in, hammocks, fabric and tissue, but the girls like to push all the bedding away and sleep on the glass soemtimes, and the boys like to sleep on top of one of their climbing tubes. Silly critters.

Don't they prefer to sleep on the glass when they are too hot?
My rat horde--two moms and 17 babies-- sleep on aspen and other stuff including hay, peanut husks, dried chickory, et al. They get deep near the glass but not to the glass itself. The do build high "sides" to the nest area. I will post more photos soon of their progress,
