Some of the Canadians on this list might be familiar with Stuart McLean's show on CBC radio.
For those who don't know him, he's an icon not only of the CBC, but in Canada, too! Storyteller par excellence! He does a weekly show, sometimes it's a studio program, where he relates some tales, presents music (mostly folk and pop) that you wouldn't normally hear otherwise, and if you're lucky he tells one of his "Dave and Morley" stories (fictional characters, Dave works at 'The Vinyl Cafe'). He also tours across the country, and the live shows are recorded and sometimes played on the radio show. Similar format to the studio show, but he tells more stories, and as well as the show's band, he'll feature local musicians (most of whom would never get that air time and nation-wide exposure!)
His Dave and Morley stories are wonderful, wonderful tales of the life of this couple (Dave is the "main" character) and their kids. The stories have been written for years and the kids have grown up during that time, too His stories are enchanting, witty, and sweet and half the time I end up tearing up at the end because it's been such a heartwarming tale, or sometimes they are bittersweet. His Christmas tales are particular gems.
Ok, now to the point of my post! hehe
Today I was listening how Dave was trying to find a gift for his pal, Kenny (who operates Kenny Wong's Scottish Meat Pies! *lol*) The condensed version...he reflects back on how, many years ago, he adopted a pet rat for his son. A fun, basically rat-positive story, given that Dave is terrified of rats
If you want to try and catch it Sunday either on the radio or online as it airs, here's more info (The Dave Stories are usually played at the end of the show, which is an hour long...maybe they start around the last 25 minutes or so) --
They will play this show again on the radio, CBC Radio One (in Vancouver 690AM) tomorrow (Feb. 4) at 12 noon PT (I believe it airs at noon, no matter where in Canada you are). If you're in the UK and you're interested, try logging onto the site at 5pm and click the Vancouver feed. I hope I've got that right!! I noticed it also gives a link on the main page (http://www.cbc.ca/vinylcafe/index.html) for United States Broadcast Info (radio stations in the States that play the show), otherwise the above info should work for online listening.
