Rainy died almost three days ago (seems like three minutes ago), and I will post more on that later in the Memorial forum, but with her gone, and the twenty gallon tank Poppy the rabbit came in available, I had something rare around here - a bit of space!
So. . . it was time to finally take the plunge into dwarfs!
One local pet store had only one female, and the other none. The one available is beautiful all-white. So, she joins the rodent/lagomorph family here.
She is supposedly three months old, extremely hyper, and remarkably small and light - I can hardly feel her in my palm. She does not bite unless she is scruffed the wrong way, and even then I could hardly feel it. She was scruffed so i could recheck gender; she's a girl alright! She loves the new small Comfort Wheel I got her, and her tucchus moves faster than any gerbil or Syrian I have.
So, since they called her a "Snowball Dwarf Hamster" I will call her Snowball. But that brings up some questions for the dwarf people out there, ones I think I know the answers to but will not speculate on:
1. What actual breed of dwarf is she?
2. In a week or so when more young females appear in the stores, how feasible is it to introduce one or two others to Snowball, using the gerbil introduction tricks we all know? I understand dwarfs do not mind living alone, but I'd rather have several together, although with three gerbil females fighting is expected to be a 50-50 chance. If extra room helps minimize fighting, I can put them in the 20 gallon tank which is now occupied by Ebony, the Syrian.
3. Does the SAME breed of dwarf have to be housed together, or can, for instance, robos be housed with Winter White?
Anyway, meet Snowball:
