Just got home from the pet store with some bath sand and a few other things. It's cage cleaning day/evening.
I'm about to clean the Dwarfs cage and see how they like the bath sand!

Tomorrow I get a lot of new bedding. I will have several mice habitats to clean, and I have to separate the newer fancies. Some Syrians need cleaning also. I have been so busy of late I got behind in my plans and lost track of the schedule. But I can tell by the smell. The dwarf Habitrail I did several days ago. Thankfully, the Spiny Mice produce very little poo and pee. One of them vanished. I had two in a tank - a ten gallon with a 15 gallon top on it. I noticed the water was not going down fast enough,so I checked and only saw one. I dug in the bedding for the body of the other - but noithing. That mouse must have squeezed under the mesh top somehow even though it is a pretty tight fit. I will have to get a 15 gallon top tomorrow. The missing one I have not heard from, and I assume died. I may need to breed another Spiny llitter later this Spring; I don't want to run out.

I've never tried a dust bath out on my hamsters. I'm curious to see if your dwarfs like it! The administrative assistant in my department has a chinchilla, and she lets her "bathe" regularly. Apparently chinchillas don't groom themselves as hamsters do.
So report back, please!

I have no time to waste on whether they like it. They get it rubbed into them gently in my palm. All of them!

Well they've checked it out and spent some time diggin in it. I'll leave it in there until I see it's become dirty. Right now, I've got it in a puppy or cat size food bowl - not ceramic... kind of like pottery I guess. It's a nice one and seems to work well for the sand. I'll let you know if I see them playing in it more. They look a little tired right now from running in their balls while I was doing the clean up

Mine either ignore sand or poop in it.

It's probably like use of the wheel--the ham will figure it out eventually.
I have never tried such a bath with my Chinese hams. Wonder if Fuzz would like it??
