Last Sunday night I was packing for our trip and decided to put Fuzz in the hamster playpen for a bit. When it was time for bed I went to take him out. He was lying in an extremely strange pose, eyes closed. It took some effort to wake him up. This I've seen in the past with other hamsters, but it still scared me. Wanting to make sure he was ok, I put him down on the kitchen floor. I NEVER do this since the floor has carpeting and since there is the fridge that he could get under. Well, he sat there sleepily for a while, and then he seemed to "come to"--and he took off for the fridge! I managed to grab him by the rear leg just before he disappeared and pullled him back. I was so upset. Did I hurt him? I tried not to think of what might have happened had he gone under there. Who knows when it was last cleaned? I kept watch over him for a while and rested more easily when I saw him run in his wheel. I also let him run Monday morning before we left and he seemed fine. He was fine last night. So I caused no lasting damage. What a scare. . .

Stuff such as that has happened to me wen I am cleaning and gender separating dozens of crittters. It especially applies to spiny mice who love to jump and can't wait to climb out of tanks the instant a top is removed. They are not shy.
Did you tell us what happened to Fuzz when you were on the trip??

When I am away Fuzz gets cared for either by my landlords or by a friend from work. I suppose that I could have the local vet board him, but this is much better, of course. He misses out on fresh food when I'm gone--I don't want them to have to worry about that--but he gets a Cheerio and a few sunflower seeds as treats.
I have come to the conclusion that he has more of an appetite than my other hams AND that I make too much food available. He is not the lean ham he was. I am trying to reduce his food a bit. . .
Back when I had Critter I knew nothing about hams, really. She lived on a diet of nothing but sunflower seeds and fresh food. She was not fat at all. Pinky got Forti-Diet pellets and (far too much) fresh food. I broke up the pellets and gave him a certain amount, so his intake was regulated. He too was not fat.
Fuzz doesn't eat some of the stuff in the Sun Seed Vita mix, so I tend to have more of it in the bowl than is good. He then can eat more. He gets less fresh food than I gave Pinky, though.

I'm glad Fuzz is doing okay! I remember when that happened to Chewie and it does scare you. Give Fuzz a hug for me.

That might just be Fuzz. Which leads me to a question: Do hamster have their own matabalizem (however you spell it) of some kind?

I would think they're pretty much the same, Hollie. Just because they have different names: Chinese, Winter White, they are all still hamsters. And it's metabolism.

I wonder. Metabolism i people, can vary somewhat, occasionally due to diet and age. it may also vary with animals.

Well, I think Fuzz was irritable when I first started reducing his food, because he got really nippy there for a while, but that went away. . . and so did some of his bulk. He is definitely a slimmer version of himself now. And, yes, DF, if I had thought about it I would have taken before and after photos!

I also get cranky with less food.
