He is "Manic Hamster" lately. Last night he was crawling up onto his wheel and also standing on his ceramic hidey reaching up the aquarium walls. I have never seen him so energetic as an adult. He IS running better since being on the NSAID. I guess he feels terrific!

I guess NSAID's take away the pain and he feels more frisky? Or something?

Well, an arthritic human takes ibuprofen or naproxen and often feels better--the same may be happening here. Either that or the drug(s) are making him hyper. He is off the Baytril now, though, and he will get the Mentex every third day.
Watching him climb his Silent Spinner from the back was amazing--he never even did that as a youngster!
I think some of his rambunctiousness may be to attract attention to be fed--now that he is on soft food he gets fed twice a day, and if he gets hungry in between there may be nothing left to snack on. Too, I am not sure how much of the soft food equates to what I had been feeding him before. I may have a perpetually hungry hamster who is going off the wall when he hasn't eaten for hours.
It's not as though he is constantly hyper--he eats and then goes to sleep eventually.

With baby food, if you're giving that to Fuzz, I give Chewie two spoonfuls of each baby food, ex: carrots and peas. If he finishes it early on in the day around, say, 5pm-I'll feed him one spoonful each so he has something till 11pm. But it depends on when you feed Fuzz. That's good that he's doing well.

His primary diet now is ground up and soaked Mazuri pellets. He gets the equivalent of 1 pellet or so in the am and one in the pm. He also gets mashed oatmeal in the am and a mash of whatever I can put together that's mashable with water in the pm (yam, overcooked broccoli or carrots, cheese, bread, and potato so far). Haven't had reason to use baby food, but I will give some to my landlords when I am away next week so that Fuzz doesn't have to live on Mazuri and Mazuri alone.
Oh--it's Metacam, not Mentex! I think Mentex is the name of an antifungal I was given for my finger. . .
He was less nutzo last night--more like the normal Fuzz.

I can type up the list of ingredients!
He didn't want to run in the ball last night. He seemed less spry when running on the bed. I'm now giving him the medication every third or fourth day. I guess it's showing. He had some last night. I'll see how he is when I get home.

Back to the vet in an hour. Now it's some eye thing--on the same side as the ear issue was. He is not himself. The eye sometimes seems to open all the way, but it is usually more closed. Last night I saw redness at the inside corner. A little fur looks lost above the eye too. When I took him out this morning, he didn't even open up the eye right away. But then again, it looked overall a little better, but still not right. So we go. The vet can also look at the teeth situation. I think it's soft food for life. Fuzz would love to nip me after these times that I try to look at his hurting parts, but he doesn't because he can't. Poor Goofyhead (one of several alternative names for him). . .

Well, he is now officially Fuzz Anthony, HSW (Hamster with Special Needs). Soft food forever. He'll need clippings every few weeks. Chewie and he should get together over drinks and share experiences. . . Another week of Baytril to try to knock out the infections. He can stay on the Metacam indefinitely. So I am going to give it to him daily again for a bit to see if he gets "young" again, then see how much I can taper it off before he seems to feel less well. A former student of mine works there--she saw Fuzz's chart and came out to visit. She graduates in three weeks, along with a number of my former students from my first year of teaching at my current institution. Lots of hand-clapping to do this time around!

Every few weeks! Fast growing teeth! As long as he is OK. Best.
