A chinchilla at Paws had a baby! I'm told they look like gerbils and have fur already on them and their eyes are already opened. I tried to get a look at the little guy/girl, but the father, Paco, made some sort of noise and I backed off. Perhaps tomorrow with my friend Sara's help I'll be able to see him/her. I just thought I'd tell you guys and a congrats to Sara too as she just got engaged!

So who gets the honor of naming the little one? I hope you get to see him/her soon!

Sounds like they come out as GP babies do - almost good to go at once. Here is a baby photo; I cannot be sure of the age:

Yes, Chinchillas, Guinea Pigs and Degus all have fully formed/furred babies who pretty much walk right out of the womb! (That's a bit of an exaggeration, but I'm sure u get it) All three of these animals are related.
Chinchillas live up to 20 years old, and are not a pet to decided one day "hey i want one", most parents kids move out at that age! They are also very aggressive chewers, and need plenty of time out to play. For the right home they make wonderful companions. I researched them for a couple years, i fostered some for a few weeks a few months back and decided they were not the pet for me. We have many here in need of homes.

>> decided they were not the pet for me. We have many here in need of homes. << Send me a few!! Why were they not the pet for you?? One; Well their life span is very long, and I already have 10 rabbits and two degus and all of them can live up to 10 years (rabbits more). I do eventually want to have my own children, and i can't have so many animals and a brand new baby, it wouldn't be fair to the animals. Two; they chew and chew and chew. They would need their own large area to run around, and I cannot provide that right now, the other animals take up all my space Plus it would be one more expense. They are prone to teeth problems so may need regular vet care, and their food isn't cheap. So if i was to have say two degus and two rabbits, I would definitely consider two Chinchillas, older rescue of course Just last month I was offered two pairs from two different people

I'll try to get a picture of it next Thursday Hollie (I'll remind myself too). He/she is very cute and is only, now, two weeks old. I petted him/her and they're very soft. With newborns I kept thinking they wouldn't be as soft as the parents.
