You just have to be very observant. Gerbils hide their pain so well. We knew Simone had a tumor so it had to be causing her discomfort. Thank goodness I have a vet that I can just call for medicine when I need it. They know I take good care of my gerbils. Metacam is a wonderful pain medicine for gerbils.

Simone is still with us. She is on metacam. She gets a dose everyday now. Her tumor did go away once but it came back with a vengeance. Her normal weight was 75 grams. Her heaviest with the tumor was 90 grams. She is now down to 85 grams. She still eats when we feed her and sometimes from the food bowl. She still drinks when we offer her the water bottle. She has not really chewed anything in over a week. I hear her grinding her teeth. She likes to sleep in a fleece cosy on our laps. She does sometimes get a small burst of energy but she is sleeping more and more. She is peeing but I have not seen any poop. She is peeing where she sleeps but Simone is still keeping her underbelly clean. Sam is taking good care of her by sleeping close to her and groom her when needed. Her coat is becoming raggy looking. She still has the lip problem. Simone is over 3 years old. Is there anymore I can do? Should I take her to the vet to at least get her teeth checked? She is day to day. Take a look at her last few pictures here: picasaweb.google.com/gerbilgal/Gerbils2010The pictures are the few last ones in the folder.

I had two miracles this Christmas. Simone is a spotted Siamese. 3 years old. Sam is a yellow Fox one year old. Simone has been ill since early December. She has an abdominal tumor. She is currently on Metacam. She is back to her fiesty self. Doing all the normal gerbil stuff. Not 100% but she is happy. My first miracle this Christmas. Sam got sick Friday morning on the 24th. We started him on antibiotics. He did drink and ate very little all day Friday. He did take one or two long drinks Friday if I held the water bottle. This morning he was not looking good at all. Sam would not eat or drink. I did give him his medicine. The vet told me yesterday that I doing all I can for him. I even have a small reptile heater to help keep him warm. I was very hesitant to leave this morning to go spend Christmas with Steve's family 2 hours away. There was nothing else we could do for Sam so we left. I did make a wish for Sam before leaving that he will be ok. We got back home about 5:30pm expecting the worst. When there in the tank we saw Sam running about being a perfectly normal gerbil. The medicine worked! I have my Sam back. My wish came true. My second miracle. Sam is so happy that I have seen him sitting in the wheel twirling and swishing his tail. I have only seen this behavior done only once or twice before. I got some wonderful gifts for Christmas but my best gift was my little babies. Merry Christmas One and All!

is Spot older? I had an older deaf gerbil who was an amazing 'Dad' to two small male pups. He lived out his days caring for them. Spot will be 3 years old October 31st. He is the mottled black in my sig tag. His former partner Little Bear will be 3 years old also on October 22nd. Since he was the more mellow of the two. I think he would benefit more from pups. He is still a very active little guy. He has the droopy eyes but that is because of his age. Lyn....Don't get paranoid. Just watch them carefully.

Spot Update:
Spot is back to old self and is doing great on his own. he is so happy that he can eat when he wants and run in his when he wants to. We are also handling him everyday. He seems to be enjoying that also. We are doing the same for Little Bear since he is on his own also. So Spot should be in good shape for the gerbil show in May. He needs second place or better to get his champsionship.

It's What MOTHERS DO Can you imagine being the photographer who caught this?! Lab has baby squirrel pinned down....and...Mother sees it (from above)! Mom takes action!! Dog gets it from Mom and baby gets away! Mother consoles baby and... Look at the dog's face ..This has to be what he is thinking... "What the hell just happened ? Did I just get my ass kicked by a squirrel???

I love feeding the squirrels also. I put food out in the back and just watch them. They are so comical. I really love the black squirrels. I only saw one in our yard once this year. We have a small yard with a small woods.
Oh Lyn, I got to send this email I got. It will crack you up! Actually I might post it here!

Spot Update:
Spot is doing well. Acting pretty like is normal self except for being alone. I can now see the bite. It is right on his wrist going across. Eventually I am thinking of getting a couple of young pups 5-6 weeks old to intro to Spot. He is so mellow that I think he would be a good dad/uncle to the babies.

The cause of declanning could be anything. A strange smell or sound. Territorial. Something the smells different in the tank after a clean. They could be fine one minute and the next, they are in a ball fight for some reason. Little Bear has always been a bully. He is the bigger gerbil of the two.
That's the thing. They were cuddling just hours before.
But I think deep down Steve and I saw this coming. They have been swabbling on/off for the past few months.
Spot's swelling on his paw has gone down so now I can see the wound. It is a bite just above his front paw. He is recovering well. He is eating normally. Chewing. Running on the wheel. I am using a wheel that won't hurt his feet.
