I just went in to play with Chopin, and noticed dark stain on some fabric in his cage. I touched it and since it was damp, so I blotted it up with some tissue. The tisse came up with a dark brown stain on it! This is the first I've noticed, so I'll keep tabs, obviously. He would seem to be alright otherwise, lots of energy 'n such. The only other thing is he seems to have blood on his nose, which I've posted about when it happened before [on another list]...I'm not sure if it's porphyrin, because normally when I think porphyrin, it's just a bit around the edge of the nostrils and it "looks" dry. This was definitlely a brighter red and was *almost* like a droplet on the side of his nose. Now that I've typed this, one other thing occurred to me, but I should have noticed it before if this is the reason...it's a new fabric (fleece) which has some colour in it (including browns). I've washed it so I don't know that more colour would come out (does fleece colour leach out?? I've never had that before). Also, he's peed on it before, and I've never noticed it dark. So...I have to assume something's going on! I just gave him some antibiotic till I have some input and will leave a message on the vet's line. Linda

I haven't noticed (that I can recall) Locutus drinking from the bottle, whereas I have noticed Hugh. Occasionally I hear drinking but don't get to the cage quick enough to see who it was.
How concerned should I be?
Maybe (hopefully) he's doing it when I'm not around. Granted I don't see them eat all THAT often, but there sure go through the food overnight!
He seems ok otherwise and I've just added a smaller bottle, too (for sake of the spout size). That's what they had before, but I had given them a large one.

Ok, now that I'd have to do a web search on! But I DO remember the reference. Ahhhh, back in my much trimmer and arguably much geekier con days, a friend of mine did up a real nice Klingon costume and headpiece. People at cons were asking me if I WERE Susie Plakson which was a nice compliment, but some were really serious! I mean, c'mon folks! Maybe I was hot but I wasn't THAT hot!! ROFLMAO!! Ahhh, the good ole days... K'Ehlin

Ok, this morning went better! They both looked like they were interested in what was going on, stretching half in and half out of their hut. I reached in and very slowly and gently tilted the hut so they both came out. Once they were out and playing in the cage I took the hut out for a few minutes which made it easier to catch them. Without the hut to run to they seemed alot more interested in having a look out the cage. Locutus is the bolder one, but once you catch them, Hugh is much more relaxed. So, Hugh and I had a good cuddle and I put him back and he's been VERY keen to see what I'm up to since then! Locutus was a big ole wiggle worm and wouldn't sit still a minute while held him...I was rather concerned because he seemed so intent on getting away that I worried he'd leap off me and hide! This temporary room they're in isn't the best for an AWOL rattie! They've both been very active this morning, and Hugh keeps sitting on top of the hut (!) and watching me Linda

Is it normal for them to sleep so much?
I realize rats are nocturnal, but these guys sure sleep solid! They were both awake for a few minutes a little while ago, and are back to sleep now (it's 9:00 pm).
Chopin and Lennier always woke right up and came to see what was up, most of the time, anyway.
Maybe it's just personalities...I just don't have experience to know that the habits should be like.

Gosh they are SO skittish!! They spend alot of time in their hut and if they are out and I try to pick them up they run to the hut!
Should I just continue to pick them up only when I have the opportunity? I've been letting them get used to my hand in the cage, which they don't mind. They let me pick them up the last day or two (when I could catch them) but not today.
Their hut is one of those oblong igloos, and it snaps together horizontally. I *could* take the top off when I want to get at them, but I don't like them to think their "safe place" isn't all that safe!
Or, I could take the top off indefinitely, then I'd always be able to get at them.
Any thoughts?

Oh right, I heard about that show! It's on the National Geographic Channel. From reading on another group, I think it's on right now in the Pacific Time Zone.
Apparently it's airing again tomorrow. "Genious Rats" or something like that.
HAHA! That's what I do, too! ;D

Hmmm, there's a thought.
Then again, I'd probably end up drawing from the online photo, and you've seen that already ;D
Funny you should mention that, though, because I've just started getting back to drawing, which I haven't really done for 25ish years!
I've only done a couple of things, one of which was a rat from the rescue site, and it turned out not TOO shabby.

alas, I'm deficient in the camera department at the moment. No digital, and the regular cameras are acting up. So is the scanner I may whip off a bunch on the SLR and get them converted to disc and see how that turns out. Linda
