March 6th, 1836. One of the most famous dates in American History.
After a siege, Mexican generalissimo, Santa Anna, launched a surprise pre-dawn attack on the Texans in the Alamo, the old mission that had been turned into a fort.
After taking heavy casualties, several thousand Mexican soldiers overcame the less than two hundred Texans in desperate fighting. Those Texans taken alive, including Davey Crockett, were later bayonetted.
"Remember the Alamo!" became the cry of Sam Houston's small Texan army as it slaughtered many hundreds of defeated Mexican troops at San Jacinto, winning independence for Texas.

I know.
I always wondered what Texans thought of the different movies about this. The most recent with Billy Bob Thornton as Corckett was the most accurate; the John Wayne version the most spectacular.
I will spare you all pages and pages about the battle; you can find it all online!
