Generally considered the battle that saved the American Revolution it followed Washington's crossing of the Delaware River in 1776.
After a long series of defeats and retreats, this victory, and the one soon following it at Princeton, forced the British out of most of New Jersey and prevented the Patriot forces from disintegrating due to a total collapse in moral.
From Wikipedia:
>> The Battle of Trenton took place on December 26, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War after General George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River north of Trenton, New Jersey. The hazardous crossing in adverse weather allowed Washington to lead the main body of the Continental Army against Hessian soldiers garrisoned at Trenton. After a brief struggle, nearly the entire Hessian force was captured, with negligible losses to the Americans. The battle boosted the Continental Army's flagging morale, and inspired re-enlistments.
The Continental Army had previously suffered several defeats in New York and had been forced to retreat across New Jersey. Morale in the army was low; in an attempt to save the army and end the year on a positive note, George Washington—Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army—devised a plan to cross the Delaware River on Christmas night and surround the Hessian garrison. . . <<
The painting, "Washington Crossing the Delaware" (1851), Oil on canvas by Emanuel Leutze, is an American icon.

I heard that due to weather and river conditions the re-enactment didn't happen. I think I heard that this was the case two years in a row now.

That is from the above gallery. Reenactors are usually quite accurate, but even I, with this my field, did not know kilts were worn in that kind of weather. More research needed.

Ironically, today is the debut of the American Revolution forum www.armchairgeneral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=317>> Reenactment of George Washington crossing Delaware River canceled THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Wednesday, December 26th 2007, 4:00 AM WASHINGTON CROSSING, N.J. - George Washington didn't make it across the Delaware this year because currents were too strong. Luckily for us, the river was a lot calmer 231 years ago. Organizers of the reenactment of the pivotal event in the Revolutionary War canceled it yesterday after the first boat trying the short voyage was swept downstream. A rescue craft stationed in the Delaware River snared the boat and returned it to the Pennsylvania shore; about 25 reenactors were aboard. No one was more disappointed than history buff Ronald Rinaldi, who was portraying Gen. Washington in the 55th annual reenactment of the military leader's daring Christmas crossing. . . << >> WASHINGTON CROSSING, N.J. (AP) — Once again, strong winds and a fast current stopped an actor portraying George Washington from crossing the Delaware River by boat. Ronald Rinaldi II, who also played the Revolutionary War general last year, instead marched across a bridge from Pennsylvania to New Jersey on Thursday during the 56th annual re-enactment of the military leader's daring Christmas crossing. "We're not going to put anyone in a position to get hurt," said Hilary Krueger, director of Pennsylvania's Washington Crossing Historic Park. Rinaldi riled his fellow 130 re-enactors and put on a show for the estimated 12,000 spectators. "Fight, men! Fight for all that you are worth, for all you cherish and love," he said as Washington. . . << I think I will post this stuff there.
