"I am leaving a glittering world where I had a glittering position, but with all of you I am descending into a greater world - the world of the poor and the suffering." One of the most remarkable women of the last few centuries was born on this day. Elizabeth Feodorovna, as she was known after moving to Russia - Ella to all. A princess from the German state of Hesse, she was considered and rightly so the great beauty of her age. Possessed of a fine mind and noble character, she vastly impressed everyone with her wisdom, goodness, and femininity, that in the Russian Imperial Court which she married into. She went to Russia and was soon followed by her younger sister, Alix, who became the czarina, and who foolishly did not follow Ella's wise advice about state affairs and avoiding Rasputin. Following a horrible and brutal assassination of her husband, Grand Duke Sergei, she began a life of even more charities and good works that eventually ended with her selling all her many possessions and properties and establishing a religious order of which she was abess. Her martyrdom occurred during the Russian Revolution. Her saintly and amazing life resulted in her canonization by the Russian Orthodox Church.
