So, several nights ago I cleaned out the 45 gallon tank which used to have ten spiny mice; we are now down to only four due to natural attrition. They were moved to a smaller tank. You know Rangi, Petey, and Max died. I posted on that. Very sad. So hairless Telly was alone, especially not good as in cold weather he could use some warmth from a friend. The room can get a bit nippy at night. Despite over a month watching him grow in a smaller cage, one new guy was still able to squeeze out through the bars - see the Rat Hunt thread. Plus I recently got three new guys, one of whom died (as his sister had) of no apparent cause. Anyway, they are young and small, and Telly's cage would never hold them. So they all went in together into that 45 gallon tank where they are now. If they grow more, or when I get the chicken wire around the cage, I can move them back, and use the 45 for at least six spiny's. All four rats are together and getting along fine, as rats normally do! The girls, behind me, simply need a cage cleaning - later today!

That's nice that Telly has some mates with him. I hope the four of them aren't cramped as you said Telly's cage wasn't that big enough.

No, I said one of the new guys was growing larger in a smaller cage.
I said Telly's cage permitted the young ones to squeeze out through the bars.
Telly's cage is around 40x20x18 or so. But it was really a GP cage and the rats have to be old enough (i.e., big enough) to not squeeze through.

If you're worried about them squeezing through you can always cover it with hardware cloth...
