So... my poor sick old rat boys have been taking to intensive care to live out their last days. I took pictures of them before they were picked up. I will post them when looking at them doesn't make me cry.
Over the past few days the boys have been losing weight rapidly. I had already arranged the head of the foster program to drop off three more mice (who are beyond adorable and will get pictures and their own topic later), so I asked her to take a look at the rats while she was over. We looked all three of the boys over, talked for about an hour about it, and decided she should take them into observation and intensive care. We are both pretty sure that at almost 3yrs old, they are past the point of living comfortably and are starting to suffer. I didn't want my last memories of them to be taking them into the vet's office and leaving without them.
So I'm pretty emotional right now as they left a few short hours ago. I know that they will cross the bridge peacefully and loved, and I know that there will be other ratties needing rescue in my life. I just wish mine didn't have to go so soon.

So sorry. You saw in the Memorial forum my own current rat misfortunes, especially with Telly. But I know the good thing was they went just like that, no suffering.

Yeah, I have had all three of them back and forth to the vet a few times. They'd lost weight, Snyper got a small tumour starting under his eye, Eddy's tumour doubled in size, Roth wasn't eating, all three were losing weight and had runny poops. I am pretty sure that after the next few days of observation they are going to come to the same conclusion I did. The boys are nearing their end. It's hard.

Oh, Dezzi, how sad--but you've done the right thing for them and for you.
Wishing a peaceful passage over the bridge for Snyper, Roth, and Eddie.

I do have good news amongst all of this. There are no rodents right now that need fosters! There are buns but they want to keep me with rodents as I wouldn't have room for more rodents if I took in one of the buns.

That IS good. We all need to look for the silver linings.
