Here is something I should have done long ago. I pushed lots of paper towels through the bars of their tall multi-level cage, and some newspaper, and the next day, after night, they had used it as flooring material lining the biggest level, the third, and lining the floor of their house. Kahini was last seen happily sleeping on it.

So, bedding materials for rats! The instinctively love to make cozy nests.
