Rats appear to be definitely more susceptible to heat than any other rodent!
Act accordingly.

Same with Degus. Degus can die from the shock of heat/cool change so they need to be slowly introduced to the cooler/warmer envoriment so not to shock their system.

That is very tricky, the time: I want to stop the overheating quickly, but too quickly is bad. . . This is really difficult. Usually with people rapid cooling is used. All mine are now in the a/c'd bedroom.

Bruce & Izzy have been moved to the basement today, as the heat is still rising.

The basement in this building is six floors below, and it is too much to carry - and too visible.
How we cool down a degu or rat in an appropriate safe manner you can tell me in due course.

I've never had to, I'm always trying to keep their temp pretty relaxed. When i transport them, I cover the cage from any drafts as i hear that's bad too. Bruce got a dish with ice cubes in it last week, lol he didn't care for it.

Two a/c's I had when fired up over a week ago did not cool - the old one in the window, and a newer looking one just given to me by a friend. And right them came an awful heatwave. Dammit. I had planned to put the other one on the dinette table. It is there, fan going, but no cooling. But I wrote all about this in the Memorial forum. Just do not wait for symptoms to appear!

STILL too hot. They have to stay in a ten gallon tank (three in each) in the a/c'd bedroom. Safer this way.

Isn't that a wee bit squishy for them in the tank? Although I'd rather be squished with my buddies than far too hot! Gotta get a bigger AC?

Do you have any cages for them? That would definetly help with circulation!

I have already written in detail about the situation here, and about the a/c's. The cages are way too big to fit in the bedroom, which is already crowded. All I can do is keep a fan over them and blow it in. 100 degrees coming tomorrow!!

We just had two days of warm weather with low humidity. Not great, but the best days since mid-June. Now here comes more heat and humidity. I will move some guys into a big cage. It will not be THAT hot outside the bedroom, and the small tank isn't right. What a Summer. October can't come fast enough. . .

Nothing new. All is well. It has been overly warm, but the horrendous HEAT of July, especially mid-July has not returned. My electric bill for the a/c exploded. Can't wait for Autumn!!!

It is actually 65 degrees right now!!! And a little windy! But it is also quite wet, much rain, and that circumscribes my plans. . .
