Yeow! Those are good, and close! Fascinating. Thanks. I am sure you know what you are doing handling them at that age. I would never have done that with a Syrian. BTW, my pet store people found a WHITE GERBIL pup for me today! Finally, after over a year searching. I get him tomorrow, and will pair him with a rescue. I had been looking for so long.

Well syrian hamsters and pallid gerbils can't really compare, being complete different species. Gerbils and most gerbil species will allow you to hold and handle their babies from the moment they are born. Hamsters are brutal mothers compared to a lot of species. Destroying a litter is almost unheard of by healthy gerbil mothers. I have an ill dipodil still trying her best to raise her pups. Being allowed to handle them makes the handraising that much easier.

I suppose we were worried about strange smells getting on the babies causing the mom to reject them. Why isn't that a concern??

Did I say it wasn't? No. 0f course its a concern, but obviously you don't just plunge your hand into the nest and grab the babies. You handle the mother, get her scent on your hands, see how she acts with you near the babies, rub your hands with the bedding, and then 90% will let you handle them. I was just explaining its different with gerbil species than with hamsters. I'd not try it with a hamster either.

Greta pics doom, I see your pallids chew the duna water holes? Mine haven't touched them yet, I blocked them several times and they instantly clear the blockage but haven't so much as nibbled at the plastic yet.. demolished their water bottle of course.

Aww... the memories of baby pups so so cute I love them. we were able to pick up our babies as soon as we knew we had some even with Nibbles she was store bought and we handles her often lol but I just think she knew we were going to pick them up though and just let it happen. We learned very quickly that you really have to cup them because they jump and fall to the floor. I would take the babies out for a bit just to give her a break, I would also just take out and let her run around with out them. They grow up so fast, my last babies are almost 3 months old now, Giacomo pictured in my siggy is one of the last pups. Nibbles is not the mother of him, she is the grandma
