So, I have a cockatiel, two parakeets, and some finches. Anyone with birds, or with advice on the best food? I am generally informed that most seed mixes are not the best especially if fed exclusively (as should not be done), and that a good pellet is far better and covers all nutritional needs. The best is apparently Zupreme: www.niteowlaviary.com/Zupreme.htmOf course besides other differences the size of the pellets for the above three types of birds is quite different. Any opinions, if you have birds?

I know this is old, but I thought I would throw my opinion in.
Bird diet is a huge debate subject. Veterinarians may say to keep birds on a pelleted diet while breeders and experts recommend seed, fresh vegetables, and whole grains. Seed diets are NOT all bad. Pellet diets, although they contain a lot of nutrition, are NOT all good either. Pellet diets are discouraged for some birds, like mutations.
If Zupreem is the best that you can find, then go with it. It's not the best overall. It depends on what kind of Zupreem you're feeding. Is it the colorful kind? Some of the Zupreem pellets have artificial colors and they're not good for birds.
I have a cockatiel (soon to be two) and a parrotlet. My cockatiel eats a mixture of seed and Roudybush pellets. He seems to like the pelleted food better than the seed. My parrotlet eats Roudybush as well. Both of my birds get fresh fruits and vegetables every day, along with bird bread and other whole grains. My parrotlet gets a little seed added to her food as well.
Whether you're feeding pellets or seeds, go with the one that has less artificial flavorings and colors; don't go with a food that has brightly colored pieces or doesn't smell like seed or pellets.

Very helpful! Thanks. Roudybush pellets I never heard of. I suppose I had better do a Web search for it. I posted photos of some local parrotlets. Very sweet little birds. I thought the brightly colored bits made it more appealing to the bird. Not so? But artificial colors do concern me. Getting my cockatiel to EAT fresh veggies and fruits is not easy; they are often ignored by the bird. What to do? I know the usual seed mix is not the healthiest thing for cockatiels, and other birds I assume. I've been trying to wean the bird off mix and into Zupreme. But she sure prefers seeds. It is a continuing concern for me. . . Everybody keep advice coming, please.
