(wasn't sure where to put this...it's about a wild bird, not a pet)
My friends who rent the downstairs said they could hear something in the fireplace. Unfortunately there's an "insert" in there so you can't really get at the fireplace.
However, it's old and never used and the frame is coming away from the bricks so they could see down inside and see the bird looking at them. I think it was a woodpecker of some variety...I've seen a pair around the house this summer. We think it was preoccupied with the bit of light coming in the loose gap that it wasn't trying to fly up and out (which is easier said than done, anyway). We were horrified to think it might die back there!
After trying different things we noticed a piece of the panel had screws in it so we could loosen it, creating a larger area for the bird to come out. Still confined, but bigger than he had. He had been sitting on top of the insert, inside the fireplace (which is worrisome...that should all be enclosed...he shouldn't have been ABLE to get on that side of it - that's something we'll have to examine another time).
We stuck a large pet carrier in front of it and smart birdie popped in there within just a couple minutes! We thrust the towel over the opening and then flattened the removed door over that. Unfortunately he very quickly got himself jammed BETWEEN the towel and the door! The girl downstairs had the idea to shine the flashlight to the back of the carrier, and presto, once we loosened a bit of towel he went right to the back!
From there it was just a matter of trying to get the towel pulled out of the way so the door could be closed properly to secure him and get the carrier outdoors.
We opened it, he flew off and gave a few chirps on his way!
