It has been a long time. it was sunny yesterday and the time was right, so two dozen frozen little critters got interned in Green-wood Cemetery in the usual place, a location I have used for nigh on a decade. A lot of work it was digging a deep hole, and then covering it, safely. We had some talks, the new ones and the old ones from years past, a prayer was said, and we moved on. I do not expect to need to do this again until 2014. I wanted it done before it got too cold and before all the foliage covering my activities was gone. Last year things got way too cold too fast. And the ground hardens. According to this site, my last burial was December 2010. Almost two years ago. Yea, I guess that is correct. There is a thread in this forum. Before that there was one in April, 2009, etc. Not sure if I created a thread for each mass burial, in this forum or in Members Only. Those interested can check. I should add the deceased were covered with paper towels, and newspaper (biodegradable), and then heavy rocks, then the tamped down soil, and then a 70 pound hunk of stone all to discourage raccoons! They are secure. During: PHOTO HEREAfter: SECOND PHOTO HEREI did a nice job securing it. There are pet graves all around that area.

Oh, yes, it'd been a long time since you did that.
I have one of my own to inter, when the day is right, and soon.
Play peacefully, critters all.

Oh you put them all together, for some reason I thought you separated them. Rest in peace all.

"For some reason"?? Yea, so I did not have to dig 24 different holes!

I know you had more than me, but when we buried Theo, Benny, and Harriet, and Sophie (all went at different times), we buried them near each other, but not on top of each other. That's why I said that.

Also, it is impossible to protect numerous holes from the raccoons and squirrels that will dig them up. One hole makes it feasible, as I described. I regret to say my first burial so long ago, which included my first gerbs, Tommy, Dill, Phil, and Cliffy ended up that way. At least they nourished the local critters. Those guys' stories are in the Gerb section still going back many years. I have one gerb left; will get rescue a pair soon.

I checked the grave site two weeks ago and all was well. A few days ago I visited it again. . . and there was now a hole dug down and then dug AT AN ANGLE! It had to be at an angle as a very heavy stone was blocking the top; there were stones inside too, heavy ones. And yet a raccoon or such still got some, that after almost six months!! That is why I try hard to protect them, and will do even more next time. Six months!! I am amazed. I also mentioned in this forum and the Gerbil forum my last gerb, Pauline, passed away. I will get a new pair from a rescue group. I also expect Hanno, the very old spiny mouse, to die soon. Almost impossible to find spiny's, but I will keep trying. I did see a white ferret in a pet store this week - a customer brought him in, which he bought in Nassau County. They are illegal in NYC thanks to Giuliani. P.S. Hanno died on May 10th, soon after Pauline the gerbil. Hanno was my last spiny Mouse.
