I'm putting this under "Rats" because that's the only pet on the forum that I know anything about...
On some groups/fora there will be, from time to time a panicky "URGENT - HELP NEEDED" post. In my own experience, it always seem to be late at night that I run into problems with my pets and sometimes you can post, and really not expect to get a reply until morning.
So that we can more readily see when someone is available who can give us advice, or at the very least, lend a supportive ear, I suggested to several groups that we share our Messenger ID's so that we can jump on there and see who is actually awake and available to contact.
I also added that since you can end up with alot of people on your Messenger, it's NOT meant to be a free invitation to chat with anyone anytime...unless they are free and interested. I didn't want for people to think that by sharing their ID's that they would be badgered with people wanted to shoot the breeze....admittedly some people open their Messenger at work so that they are available for rattie help. Although my Messenger is open frequently (I'm at home) I'm often busy with stuff on the computer so can't really stop to chat. The idea is to be available for anyone who's experiencing an emergency.
That said, if anyone cares to add me, my ID's are: Yahoo Messenger intothemist1999 MSN/Windows Messenger: intothemist1999@yahoo.com

I will also post that as a Sticky announcement later.
Since I am very busy right now, and since I do not have that, what is (for me or others) the easiest way to install such a messenger program?

The first link is for Windows XP, which I don't have. The second option I will get to today. This thread is now a Sticky at the top of the forum.

Do you have a different version of Windows?

98 SE The Windows link is for the XP OS; that Yahoo link I tried several times and it locks when I click "Install", and it sometimes locks the whole PC!

Hmmm, I'm still looking to see if there's an alternative. One site I came across said that Windows Messenger came out for use with Windows XP, but I've always used Windows, and as far as I remember, there was always a Messenger of some sort with it.
You're sure it's not in your start/all programs list? Might be listed as MSN Messenger.

a PS to my last post...
Windows Messenger used to be called MSN Messenger. If an older version of Messenger can be dowloaded, I'm not 100% sure if it can communicate with the newer Windows Messenger. I'm trying to find more info.

No, not in Start/Programs, or any accessories.

Ok, I've been emailing around and I'm told Windows 98 *should* have MSN Messenger already installed, so I'm surprised it's not there. I dont' suppose you've done search on your computer for it? If you or anyone else isn't sure how to do that ,I think this MAY be the way... 1) short way: if you know where to find your "Program Files" folder, you will see MSN Messenger listed there. 2) the longer way, or if you don't know where you Program FIles are: Click "start" and you should see an option to "search". If not, click "control panel". There *should* be a "search" option. I think you'd click "files and folders". In the field called "all or part of the file name", you'd enter "MSN Messenger" and if that doesn't work, try "MSN" or "Messenger". Failing that, this site has the older versions. I opened my old MSN Messenger, and it has the same contacts as my Windows Messenger, so obviously it was automatically converted. The two programs should be compatible for chatting. www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=msnm

In which sub folder?
Searching:
The only Messenger I get is an old AOL one in an old browser - Netscape 7.2.
I will try the other options later Sunday. Bit I gotta go. Thanks for the help! Back later.

I know that. And what sub folder inside the Program Files folder? None visible say anything about MSN Messenger.
I will try that last link you gave later today.

Oh! Sorry. Under Program Files I have a file named MSN Messenger. For the record, I didn't see Windows Messenger at that point. I guess it's somewhere else on my computer and I'm just out the door now, so will have to check where later.
Since you may need MSN Messenger in fact, just a reminder that it would *seem* the 2 programs are compatible for instant messaging.

>> Under Program Files I have a file named MSN Messenger. << A file and not a sub folder. I don't have any files in Program Files without being in a sub folder. I spent what free time I had today attending a very nice St. Patrick's Day parade with countless bag pipe bands. . . and then I spent ovr two hours tearing apart my living room looking for an escaped natal rat; she got loose four days ago and has been unseen since and has avoided the Havahart trap. After moving tons of stuff and habitats, I then moved and lifted the heavy couch - awful cleaning job needed. I then pulled out the convertible bed and peaked inside. . . and saw a white tail!! I looked closer and the rat was scampering inside the couch's backboard. Further attempts to catch her failed. So, water and food get left out, as does the Havahart, again. If all else fails I will have to use a glue board - and use corn oil to get her off safely ASAP. So I have been busy.
