Last mite infestation I had was two years ago, until this month. But it is OK now. They suddenly appeared from "nowhere", multiplied quickly, and caused me a lot of inconvenience fighting them (including putting empty tanks on the roof in frigid temps - it worked!).
I wonder if they mites came from the alfalfa. . . I am freezing everything now first.
I was actually wondering if a group of hamster habitats might start to smell, not so I would notice (I am used to it), but a little so that neighbors would.

I only have two hamster cages, both pairs of WWs and yes they can get wiffy much quicker than gerbils I just clean them more often but there's no way I'd want large quantities of hamsters. We live in a 3rd floow flat, its not overbig and my animals are mainly in the living room. The smelliest animals, surprisingly, are the corn snakes!!!

The mouse-lover (and breeder) I got my five mice from has a small apartment. The walls were covered in mice tanks all in some frame thing! Oddly enough, there was no smell. All forty+ of my critters are in the living room, except for one in the dinette. No one is in here with me, the bedroom, as I could not sleep!

Oh BTW I just looked back over the begining of this post. I guess I should update you on my rattys. Vodka began going round in circles and losing weight rapidly. while Bacardi was having difficulty breathing. I took them to the vet and was told Vodkas tumour had spread to her brain, which was why she was unable to function. Bacardis was putting pressure on her chest, she would have spent the rest of her life on steroids and antibiotics. I made the decision to have them pts together as their quality of life was so poor. Of course I miss my girls, bet we did what was best and they went peacefully, two sisters together, just as they'd done everything together in life. RIP little ratty girls.

That is very sad. So sorry. Please post more about them with photos in the Memorial forum. (That is one reason I have hestitated to get rats - shorter liver; tumors). - - - - - - - subsequent edit: SHORTER "LIVER"?? No, shorter lives! Sigh. Too pressed for time. . . more later. . .

DF, I sometimes wonder if you have a sense of smell, or maybe rodent smells are like perfume to you. My apartment used to smell until I got a great ozonater, which removes all the smells.
Dooms, so sorry to hear about your ratties, but it does sound like you made the right choice. I just had a gerbil put to sleep a week ago, because she had congestive heart failure. It was very sudden and very sad.

awwwwwwww bet you misss her yes its sad, but sadder and crueller to let an animal suffer needlessly. I am lucky enough to ahve a VERY good relationship with my vet. she accepts that on gerbil health issues I often know as much as she does about certain issues as I have access to some very well educated idividuals. We discuss options and can decide between us the best solution in any given scenario. With the rats we both felt Vodka had reached the end of the line, and Bacardis treatment would hve been very stressful for her without her sister. I'm sure with your gerbil you too made the correct, if difficult, decision. {{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}}}}}

My vet is great too, and does housecall visits, which really helps. There was no point in prolonging her life, because she was struggling to breathe, and would have ended up suffocating if we let it go. The hardest part was knowing that her friend, Pleiades, was losing her life mate.
The nice thing about your rats is that they got to leave together, and didn't have to miss each other.

DF, I sometimes wonder if you have a sense of smell, or maybe rodent smells are like perfume to you. My apartment used to smell until I got a great ozonater, which removes all the smells. One would think when I walk in the door I would detect something, but no. I do smell the rabbit potty area, and I just cleaned the GP cage, and they smelled. I got today "Yesterday's News" - rabbit litter. From past experience it handles the potty smells very well neutralizing them. I have several times mopped down all the walls, floors and ceilings with Mistolin, full strength! The place now smells like a lilac garden in full bloom inside a bottle of vanilla extract! It is quite nice, actually.

hi again lifes been awful busy Fliedermause you seem to have lost a lot of pets lately...my sympathys I recently ahd a scare after losing most of 3 gerbil litters to diarrhoea...had to ahve cultures done but all is clear. Cost a packet but what choice do you have when you lose a few? You just have to have tests done to make sure nothings going to pass to your other animals don't you? They dont respond to the normal baytril and from now on my gerbils will have marbocyl instead. I now have 3 gerbil species with pups + WW hamster cubs new gerbil pups My first burmese from Darth Vader (a black carrying c(chm) from Eddie Copes breeding and my lovely Tufty ) And now pallid pups and my charming dipodils these are f4s ie 4th generation from the wild

Thanks. It has been a sad time,. especially as Zeb was the last of an entire litter I kept. But that story is related elsewhere. No one around here has diarrhea; the last time was in March of 2003 when I think Princess got it from too much lettuce. She got Baytril anyway, and was OK. The dipodils are especially cute. Can pallids grasp with their toes, like mice? Looks like someone is waking up in that tube! Thanks for the photos.

Hi all I don't often get back in here Too much else going on...working three jobs, kids growing up and of course my furries I've had a few losses since I was last here and a few births. My black line developed fitting and had to be discontinued. My dipodil line is at a dead end due to lack of new breeding individuals and risks of inbreeding. I'm resting from breeding till I decide where to go from here. No shows recently but hopefully Enfield in June or if not Southsea in August. Anyway I'll try nto to be a stranger. ttfn

Hi there "Doomgerbiluk" Thanks for dropping in Better to have you here a little, then not at all! Nice to have some gerbil-knowledgeable people around. I know nothing about gerbils! I'm so busy too: two positions at work, 5 hamsters, looking after my friend's cat for 6 weeks (not in my place though). Tight schedule these days. Keep in touch whenever you can. Take care.
